Story 4.1.5: Registration Wizard (2-Step Flow)

Dependencies

Depends on: Story 4.1.5a (Registration Architecture Foundation)

Status

Done

Story

As a public website visitor, I want to register for the current event through an intuitive 2-step wizard, so that I can secure my spot at the event with minimal friction.

Implementation Approach: Hybrid Registration UX

This story implements a hybrid registration approach combining the best of both inline and dedicated page experiences:

Primary UX: Inline Expandable Registration (Accordion-Style)

  • Location: Directly within homepage HeroSection
  • Trigger: Clicking β€œRegister Now” button expands registration form inline
  • Benefits: Reduces friction, keeps user on homepage, seamless UX
  • Behavior:
    • Step 1 expands within hero section
    • Accordion-style transitions: Step 1 collapses when Step 2 expands
    • After submission, redirect to /registration-confirmation/:confirmationCode

Secondary UX: Dedicated Registration Page

  • Route: /register/:eventCode
  • Use Cases: Shareable links, email CTAs, social media posts, direct bookmarking
  • Benefits: Dedicated URL for marketing, deep linking support
  • Implementation: Same wizard components as inline (DRY principle)

Component Reuse

All registration wizard components work in both contexts with no duplication:

  • RegistrationWizard.tsx - Shared wizard container
  • RegistrationAccordion.tsx - Shared accordion wrapper
  • PersonalDetailsStep.tsx - Shared Step 1 component
  • ConfirmRegistrationStep.tsx - Shared Step 2 component

Wireframe Reference

See /docs/wireframes/story-4.1.5-inline-registration-accordion.md for detailed visual specifications of both inline and dedicated page flows.

Domain Context

Primary Domain

Attendee Experience Domain (Event registration)

Involved Services

  • web-frontend (React 19 + TypeScript)
  • Event Management Service (via API Gateway)
  • API Gateway: POST /api/v1/events/{eventCode}/registrations

Cross-Domain Dependencies

  • Event Management Service handles event-level registration logic
  • Anonymous registration support per ADR-005
  • Email-based account linking (automatic when user creates Cognito account)

Requirements Context

  • Epic 4, Story 4.1
  • Wireframe: docs/wireframes/story-2.4-event-registration.md
  • ADR-005: Anonymous Event Registration

Acceptance Criteria

  1. Inline Registration: Clicking β€œRegister Now” on homepage expands registration wizard within HeroSection
  2. Dedicated Page: /register/:eventCode route displays RegistrationWizard (anonymous access, no auth required)
  3. Component Reuse: Same wizard components work in both inline and dedicated contexts
  4. Step 1: Personal details form with validation
    • Fields: firstName, lastName, email, company, role
    • Validation: required fields, email format
    • react-hook-form + zod validation
  5. Accordion Transitions: Step 1 collapses when Step 2 expands (smooth 300ms animation)
  6. Step 2: Review & confirm
    • Display summary of personal info (read-only card)
    • Communication preferences (newsletter, event reminders)
    • Special requests (dietary, accessibility)
    • Terms & conditions checkbox (required)
    • β€œComplete Registration” button
  7. Progress indicator shows current step (1/2, 2/2)
  8. Navigation: [Back], [Next], [Cancel] buttons with proper validation
  9. Form state preserved when navigating between steps
  10. API Integration: POST /api/v1/events/{eventCode}/registrations on final submit
  11. Event-level registration: User registers for entire event (not individual sessions)
  12. Validation errors displayed inline with clear messages
  13. On success: Redirect to confirmation page with confirmationCode (format: BAT-YYYY-NNNNNN)
  14. Inline-specific: HeroSection expands smoothly (500ms transition) when β€œRegister Now” clicked
  15. Inline-specific: After successful registration, hero collapses back to default state before redirect

Dev Notes - Implementation Guide

Backend API Implementation

RegistrationController.java (Event Management Service):

java
/**
 * Create registration (PUBLIC ACCESS - no auth required)
 * Allows anonymous public users to register for events
 */
@PostMapping("/events/{eventCode}/registrations")
public ResponseEntity<RegistrationDTO> createRegistration(
    @PathVariable String eventCode,
    @RequestBody @Valid CreateRegistrationRequest request
) {
    Registration registration = registrationService.createAnonymousRegistration(eventCode, request);
    RegistrationDTO dto = registrationMapper.toDTO(registration);
    return ResponseEntity.status(HttpStatus.CREATED).body(dto);
}

/**
 * Get registration by ID (PUBLIC ACCESS)
 * Anyone with registration ID can view their registration
 */
@GetMapping("/events/{eventCode}/registrations/{confirmationCode}")
public ResponseEntity<RegistrationDTO> getRegistration(
    @PathVariable String eventCode,
    @PathVariable String confirmationCode
) {
    Registration registration = registrationService.getByConfirmationCode(eventCode, confirmationCode);
    return ResponseEntity.ok(registrationMapper.toDTO(registration));
}

CreateRegistrationRequest.java:

java
public record CreateRegistrationRequest(
    @Email @NotBlank String email,
    @NotBlank String firstName,
    @NotBlank String lastName,
    @NotBlank String company,
    @NotBlank String role,
    @NotNull Boolean termsAccepted,
    CommunicationPreferences communicationPreferences,
    String specialRequests
) {
    public record CommunicationPreferences(
        Boolean newsletterSubscribed,
        Boolean eventReminders
    ) {}
}

Update SecurityConfig.java:

java
.requestMatchers(POST, "/api/v1/events/{eventCode}/registrations").permitAll()
.requestMatchers(GET, "/api/v1/events/{eventCode}/registrations/{confirmationCode}").permitAll()
.requestMatchers(GET, "/api/v1/events/{eventCode}/registrations/{confirmationCode}/qr").permitAll()

Frontend API Integration

Extend eventApiClient.ts:

typescript
// Add to web-frontend/src/services/eventApiClient.ts

/**
 * Create event registration (public access - anonymous allowed)
 * Per ADR-005: Anonymous registration with email-based account linking
 */
async createRegistration(
  eventCode: string,
  data: RegistrationRequest
): Promise<Registration> {
  try {
    const response = await apiClient.post<Registration>(
      `/events/${eventCode}/registrations`,
      data
    );
    return response.data;
  } catch (error) {
    throw this.transformError(error);
  }
}

/**
 * Get registration by confirmation code (public access)
 */
async getRegistration(
  eventCode: string,
  confirmationCode: string
): Promise<Registration> {
  try {
    const response = await apiClient.get<Registration>(
      `/events/${eventCode}/registrations/${confirmationCode}`
    );
    return response.data;
  } catch (error) {
    throw this.transformError(error);
  }
}

Types (add to event.types.ts):

typescript
export interface RegistrationRequest {
  email: string;
  firstName: string;
  lastName: string;
  company: string;
  role: string;
  termsAccepted: boolean;
  communicationPreferences?: {
    newsletterSubscribed?: boolean;
    eventReminders?: boolean;
  };
  specialRequests?: string;
}

export interface Registration {
  id: string;
  confirmationCode: string;  // Format: BAT-YYYY-NNNNNN
  eventCode: string;
  status: 'registered' | 'confirmed' | 'waitlisted' | 'cancelled' | 'attended';
  registrationDate: string;
  firstName: string;
  lastName: string;
  email: string;
  company: string;
}

Executive Summary

Gate Decision: CONCERNS β†’ docs/qa/gates/4.1.5-registration-wizard.yml

This is an exceptionally well-implemented feature with comprehensive test coverage (74 tests), clean architecture, and all 15 acceptance criteria fully met. The implementation demonstrates excellent engineering practices with proper TDD, reusable components, and thorough error handling.

The CONCERNS gate is issued solely due to a minor organizational issue with UI component directory structure (components installed in ui/ui/ instead of ui/), which should be addressed for consistency but does not impact functionality.

Quality Score: 92/100

Code Quality Assessment

Outstanding Implementation Strengths:

  1. True Component Reusability: The hybrid approach works flawlessly

    • Same RegistrationWizard component used in both inline (HeroSection) and dedicated page modes
    • Props-based mode switching (inline boolean, onCancel callback)
    • Zero code duplication between contexts
  2. Excellent Test Coverage: 74 tests covering all scenarios

    • Backend: 12 integration tests (all passing)
    • Frontend: 62 tests across 4 test suites (all passing)
    • Test coverage includes: navigation, validation, submission, error handling, loading states, cancel behavior
  3. Robust Form Validation:

    • react-hook-form + zod schema validation
    • Client-side validation with user-friendly error messages
    • Server-side validation in backend
    • Terms acceptance enforcement before submission
  4. Smooth User Experience:

    • Accordion-style transitions (300ms animations)
    • Progress indicator (1/2, 2/2)
    • Form state preservation during navigation
    • Loading states with spinner during submission
    • Error display with clear messaging
  5. Architecture Compliance:

    • βœ… Type sharing via event.types.ts (no duplication)
    • βœ… API calls through service layer (eventApiClient)
    • βœ… Proper error handling with correlation IDs
    • βœ… Backend follows ADR-005 for anonymous registration
    • βœ… SecurityConfig properly configured with permitAll()

Requirements Traceability

All 15 Acceptance Criteria Fully Met:

AC Requirement Status Evidence

  • Error messages displayed for verification
  • Progress bar state observable

Debuggability: EXCELLENT

  • TypeScript provides strong type checking
  • Clear error messages with context
  • Comprehensive test descriptions
  • Code structure is easy to follow

Issues Found

Low Severity:

ID Finding Action Priority
ORG-001 shadcn UI components in nested ui/ui/ directory Reorganize to standard ui/ structure and update imports Low

Details - ORG-001:

  • Files affected: checkbox.tsx, collapsible.tsx, textarea.tsx, input.tsx
  • Current location: web-frontend/src/components/public/ui/ui/
  • Expected location: web-frontend/src/components/public/ui/
  • Import updates needed:
    • RegistrationAccordion.tsx:13
    • PersonalDetailsStep.tsx:19
    • ConfirmRegistrationStep.tsx:9-10
  • Impact: None on functionality (compiles and runs correctly)
  • Reason for fix: Consistency with shadcn conventions and project structure

Improvements Checklist

None required for production readiness - This implementation is excellent as-is.

Recommended for future cleanup:

  • Reorganize shadcn UI components from ui/ui/ to ui/

Security Review

βœ… PASS - No security concerns identified

  • Public registration endpoints properly configured
  • Anonymous registration follows ADR-005 security model
  • Terms acceptance enforced before data submission
  • No XSS vulnerabilities (React escapes by default)
  • No SQL injection risks (using parameterized queries)
  • CORS properly configured in API Gateway
  • Rate limiting should be handled at API Gateway level (out of scope for this story)

Performance Considerations

βœ… PASS - Performance is excellent

  • Smooth animations (300ms transitions)
  • Efficient state updates (no unnecessary re-renders)
  • Form validation optimized (on blur, not on every keystroke)
  • Single API call on final submission
  • Progress bar uses inline styles (no layout thrashing)
  • Bundle size impact minimal (reuses existing UI components)

Suggestions for monitoring:

  • Monitor registration API response times in production
  • Track accordion animation performance on mobile devices
  • Consider lazy loading PersonalDetailsStep/ConfirmRegistrationStep if bundle size becomes concern

Files Modified During Review

None - Review was non-invasive (no refactoring required)

Gate Status

Gate: CONCERNS β†’ docs/qa/gates/4.1.5-registration-wizard.yml

Quality Score: 92/100

Risk Profile:

  • Critical: 0
  • High: 0
  • Medium: 0
  • Low: 1 (directory structure)

Reasoning: This is an exemplary implementation with all acceptance criteria met, comprehensive test coverage (74 tests, 100% passing), and excellent code quality. The CONCERNS gate is issued solely for a minor organizational issue (UI components in ui/ui/ instead of ui/). This does not impact functionality but should be addressed for consistency.

The implementation demonstrates:

  • βœ… Proper TDD workflow (tests written first)
  • βœ… Clean architecture (true component reusability)
  • βœ… Comprehensive error handling
  • βœ… All NFRs satisfied (security, performance, reliability, maintainability)
  • βœ… Backend integration tests use real PostgreSQL (not H2)
  • βœ… Type safety throughout

βœ… Ready for Production with one minor cleanup recommendation

Recommendation:

  • Story can be marked as Done immediately
  • The UI directory structure issue (ORG-001) can be addressed in a future cleanup story or technical debt sprint
  • No blocking issues identified

Next Steps:

  1. βœ… Mark story as Done (implementation is complete and tested)
  2. βœ… Deploy to staging for manual QA confirmation (Task 10)
  3. πŸ“‹ Create technical debt ticket for UI directory reorganization (optional, low priority)
  4. βœ… Proceed with confidence to production
