Story 2.5.3a: Event Theme Image Upload

Status

Not started

Story

As an event organizer, I want to upload and display a theme image for each event, so that events have visual appeal and are more recognizable on the dashboard and detail pages.

Domain Context

Primary Domain

Event Management Domain - Extending events with visual theme images using the generic file upload service

Involved Services

  • Backend: Event Management Service (event CRUD operations)
  • Backend: Generic File Upload Service (three-phase upload pattern from ADR-002)
  • Frontend: React application (event display and form components)
  • Storage: AWS S3 for image storage
  • CDN: CloudFront for image delivery

Cross-Domain Dependencies

Foundation Dependencies (MUST be complete):

  • Depends on: Story 1.16.3 (Generic File Upload Service) - DONE โœ…

    • Provides: Three-phase upload pattern (PENDING โ†’ CONFIRMED โ†’ ASSOCIATED)
    • Provides: GenericLogoService for file management
    • Provides: FileUpload React component for frontend
    • Provides: Logo entity and repository
    • Provides: Endpoints: POST /logos/presigned-url, POST /logos/{uploadId}/confirm
    • Location: services/company-user-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/companyuser/service/GenericLogoService.java
    • ADR Reference: docs/architecture/ADR-002-generic-file-upload-service.md
  • Depends on: Story 2.5.3 (Event Management Frontend) - IN PROGRESS โณ

    • Provides: EventForm, EventCard, Event detail page components
    • Provides: Event type definitions and API client
    • Location: web-frontend/src/components/organizer/EventManagement/

Important: This story follows the ADR-002 pattern:

  1. Phase 1: Upload initiation via POST /logos/presigned-url (no entity required)
  2. Phase 2: S3 upload + confirmation via POST /logos/{uploadId}/confirm
  3. Phase 3: Association during event creation/update (copy temp โ†’ final S3 location)

Requirements Context

  • FR5: Progressive event publishing with automatic content updates
  • NFR-Performance: Image load <1s, CDN delivery
  • NFR-UX: Visual consistency across dashboard and detail pages
  • NFR-Storage: Automatic cleanup of orphaned uploads (24h PENDING, 7d CONFIRMED)

Acceptance Criteria Source

Epic 2, Story 2.5.3a - Event theme image feature

Architecture Context

Architecture Patterns

File Upload Pattern (ADR-002):

Phase 1: Upload Initiation
Frontend โ†’ POST /logos/presigned-url โ†’ GenericLogoService
         โ† {presignedUrl, uploadId, fileId}

Phase 2: S3 Upload & Confirmation
Frontend โ†’ PUT {presignedUrl} (binary) โ†’ S3
Frontend โ†’ POST /logos/{uploadId}/confirm โ†’ GenericLogoService

Phase 3: Entity Association (during event create/update)
Frontend โ†’ POST /events {title, ..., themeImageUploadId} โ†’ EventService
EventService โ†’ associateLogoWithEntity() โ†’ GenericLogoService
             โ†’ Copy S3: logos/temp/{uploadId}/ โ†’ logos/{year}/events/{eventCode}/
             โ†’ Update Logo status: CONFIRMED โ†’ ASSOCIATED

S3 Key Strategy:

  • Temporary: logos/temp/{uploadId}/logo-{fileId}.{ext} (during upload)
  • Final: logos/{year}/events/{eventCode}/theme-{uploadId}.{ext} (after association)

Image Specifications:

  • Max File Size: 5 MB
  • Allowed Types: image/png, image/jpeg, image/svg+xml
  • Recommended Dimensions: 1920x400px (16:4.8 aspect ratio)
  • CDN Delivery: Via CloudFront with 1-year cache

Database Schema

Modified Table: events

sql
ALTER TABLE events
ADD COLUMN theme_image_url VARCHAR(1000),
ADD COLUMN theme_image_upload_id VARCHAR(100);

CREATE INDEX idx_events_theme_image ON events(theme_image_upload_id);

Existing Table: logos (from Story 1.16.3)

sql
-- No changes needed - reuses existing logos table
-- New records will have:
--   associated_entity_type = 'EVENT'
--   associated_entity_id = eventCode (e.g., 'BATbern57')

Acceptance Criteria

AC1: Backend - Event Entity Extension

Given the Event entity exists When extending it with theme image fields Then

  • Event entity has themeImageUrl field (String, nullable)
  • Event entity has themeImageUploadId field (String, nullable)
  • Database migration V7 adds columns to events table
  • OpenAPI spec updated with new fields

AC2: Backend - Event Creation with Theme Image

Given a user has uploaded an image (Phase 1-2 complete) When creating an event with CreateEventRequest { ..., themeImageUploadId } Then

  • EventService calls genericLogoService.associateLogoWithEntity(uploadId, "EVENT", eventCode, finalS3Key)
  • S3 file copied from temp to final location: logos/{year}/events/{eventCode}/theme-{uploadId}.png
  • Event.themeImageUrl set to CloudFront URL
  • Logo status updated to ASSOCIATED
  • Event returned with themeImageUrl in response

AC3: Backend - Event Update with Theme Image

Given an existing event When updating with PATCH /events/{eventCode} { themeImageUploadId } Then

  • New theme image associated (if uploadId provided)
  • Old theme image remains (no automatic deletion - audit trail)
  • Event.themeImageUrl updated to new CloudFront URL
  • Logo status updated to ASSOCIATED

AC4: Frontend - EventCard Theme Image Display

Given an event with themeImageUrl When displaying EventCard on dashboard Then

  • Theme image displayed at top of card (full width, 200px height)
  • Image has object-fit: cover for consistent aspect ratio
  • Fallback to gradient background if no theme image
  • Image loads with lazy loading
  • Image has alt text: โ€œTheme image for {eventTitle}โ€

AC5: Frontend - Event Detail Theme Image Display

Given an event with themeImageUrl When viewing event detail page Then

  • Theme image displayed full-width below title, above info card
  • Image height: 400px on desktop, 200px on mobile
  • Image has object-fit: cover
  • Fallback to gradient background if no theme image
  • Image loads immediately (no lazy loading on detail page)

AC6: Frontend - Theme Image Upload in EventForm

Given creating or editing an event When using EventForm Then

  • FileUpload component displayed at bottom of form
  • Component shows current theme image (if exists)
  • User can upload new image (PNG, JPEG, SVG up to 5MB)
  • Upload follows three-phase pattern:
    1. POST /logos/presigned-url
    2. PUT to S3 with progress indicator
    3. POST /logos/{uploadId}/confirm
  • uploadId stored in form state
  • Form submission includes themeImageUploadId
  • Success/error messages displayed

AC7: API Spec - OpenAPI Updates

Given the events-api.openapi.yml file When updating for theme images Then

  • Event schema includes themeImageUrl (string, nullable)
  • CreateEventRequest includes themeImageUploadId (string, nullable)
  • UpdateEventRequest includes themeImageUploadId (string, nullable)
  • PatchEventRequest includes themeImageUploadId (string, nullable)
  • Frontend types regenerated via npm run generate:api-types

Tasks

Backend Tasks

Task 1: Database Migration

File: services/event-management-service/src/main/resources/db/migration/V7__Add_theme_image_to_events.sql

Implementation:

sql
-- Add theme image columns to events table
ALTER TABLE events
ADD COLUMN theme_image_url VARCHAR(1000),
ADD COLUMN theme_image_upload_id VARCHAR(100);

-- Index for cleanup queries
CREATE INDEX idx_events_theme_image ON events(theme_image_upload_id);

-- Comment
COMMENT ON COLUMN events.theme_image_url IS 'CloudFront URL for event theme image (from GenericLogoService)';
COMMENT ON COLUMN events.theme_image_upload_id IS 'Upload ID from three-phase upload pattern (ADR-002)';

Validation:

  • Run migration on local database
  • Verify columns exist: \d events
  • No data loss (existing events unaffected)

Task 2: Update Event Entity

File: services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/domain/Event.java

Implementation:

java
@Entity
@Table(name = "events")
public class Event {
    // ... existing fields

    @Column(name = "theme_image_url", length = 1000)
    private String themeImageUrl;

    @Column(name = "theme_image_upload_id", length = 100)
    private String themeImageUploadId;

    // Getters and setters
    public String getThemeImageUrl() {
        return themeImageUrl;
    }

    public void setThemeImageUrl(String themeImageUrl) {
        this.themeImageUrl = themeImageUrl;
    }

    public String getThemeImageUploadId() {
        return themeImageUploadId;
    }

    public void setThemeImageUploadId(String themeImageUploadId) {
        this.themeImageUploadId = themeImageUploadId;
    }
}

Validation:

  • Entity compiles without errors
  • JPA can map entity to database table
  • No conflicts with existing fields

Task 3: Update DTOs

Files:

  • services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/dto/CreateEventRequest.java
  • services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/dto/UpdateEventRequest.java
  • services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/dto/PatchEventRequest.java
  • services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/dto/EventResponse.java

Implementation:

java
// CreateEventRequest.java
public class CreateEventRequest {
    // ... existing fields

    @Schema(description = "Upload ID from /logos/presigned-url for event theme image",
            example = "abc123-def456")
    private String themeImageUploadId;

    // Getter and setter
}

// UpdateEventRequest.java
public class UpdateEventRequest {
    // ... existing fields

    @Schema(description = "Upload ID from /logos/presigned-url for event theme image")
    private String themeImageUploadId;

    // Getter and setter
}

// PatchEventRequest.java
public class PatchEventRequest {
    // ... existing fields

    @Schema(description = "Upload ID from /logos/presigned-url for event theme image")
    private String themeImageUploadId;

    // Getter and setter
}

// EventResponse.java
public class EventResponse {
    // ... existing fields

    @Schema(description = "CloudFront URL for event theme image",
            example = "https://d123456.cloudfront.net/logos/2025/events/BATbern57/theme-abc123.png")
    private String themeImageUrl;

    // Getter and setter
}

Validation:

  • DTOs compile without errors
  • Swagger UI shows new fields
  • Field validation works (nullable)

Task 4: Add GenericLogoService Dependency

File: services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/service/EventService.java

Implementation:

java
@Service
@Transactional
public class EventService {

    private final EventRepository eventRepository;
    private final GenericLogoService genericLogoService; // NEW

    public EventService(
            EventRepository eventRepository,
            GenericLogoService genericLogoService) { // NEW
        this.eventRepository = eventRepository;
        this.genericLogoService = genericLogoService;
    }

    // ... existing methods
}

Note: GenericLogoService is in company-user-management-service. Options:

  1. Move to shared-kernel (preferred - makes it truly generic)
  2. REST client call from event-management-service to company-user-management-service
  3. Duplicate logic (not recommended)

Decision: For this story, assume GenericLogoService will be moved to shared-kernel or event-management-service can access it via shared library/module.

Validation:

  • Service compiles without errors
  • Dependency injection works
  • Can call genericLogoService methods

Task 5: Implement Theme Image Association in Create

File: services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/service/EventService.java

Implementation:

java
public EventResponse createEvent(CreateEventRequest request) {
    // Create event entity
    Event event = Event.builder()
        .eventNumber(request.getEventNumber())
        .title(request.getTitle())
        .description(request.getDescription())
        .date(request.getDate())
        // ... other fields
        .themeImageUploadId(request.getThemeImageUploadId()) // Store uploadId
        .build();

    // Generate eventCode
    String eventCode = generateEventCode(event.getEventNumber());
    event.setEventCode(eventCode);

    // Save event (needed for eventCode)
    Event savedEvent = eventRepository.save(event);

    // Associate theme image if provided
    if (request.getThemeImageUploadId() != null) {
        associateThemeImage(savedEvent, request.getThemeImageUploadId());
    }

    return mapToResponse(savedEvent);
}

private void associateThemeImage(Event event, String uploadId) {
    try {
        // Generate final S3 key
        int year = LocalDate.now().getYear();
        String finalS3Key = String.format(
            "logos/%d/events/%s/theme-%s.png",
            year,
            event.getEventCode(),
            uploadId
        );

        // Call GenericLogoService to associate
        String cloudFrontUrl = genericLogoService.associateLogoWithEntity(
            uploadId,
            "EVENT",
            event.getEventCode(),
            finalS3Key
        );

        // Update event with CloudFront URL
        event.setThemeImageUrl(cloudFrontUrl);
        eventRepository.save(event);

        log.info("Theme image associated for event {}: {}",
                event.getEventCode(), cloudFrontUrl);

    } catch (Exception e) {
        log.error("Failed to associate theme image for event {}: {}",
                event.getEventCode(), e.getMessage());
        // Don't fail event creation - theme image is optional
    }
}

Validation:

  • Create event without themeImageUploadId works (backward compatible)
  • Create event with themeImageUploadId associates image
  • S3 file copied from temp to final location
  • Event.themeImageUrl set to CloudFront URL
  • Error handling works (event created even if image fails)

Task 6: Implement Theme Image Association in Update/Patch

File: services/event-management-service/src/main/java/ch/batbern/eventmanagement/service/EventService.java

Implementation:

java
public EventResponse updateEvent(String eventCode, UpdateEventRequest request) {
    Event event = findEventByCode(eventCode);

    // Update fields
    event.setTitle(request.getTitle());
    event.setDescription(request.getDescription());
    // ... other fields

    // Update theme image if new uploadId provided
    if (request.getThemeImageUploadId() != null &&
        !request.getThemeImageUploadId().equals(event.getThemeImageUploadId())) {
        associateThemeImage(event, request.getThemeImageUploadId());
    }

    Event updatedEvent = eventRepository.save(event);
    return mapToResponse(updatedEvent);
}

public EventResponse patchEvent(String eventCode, PatchEventRequest request) {
    Event event = findEventByCode(eventCode);

    // Apply patches (only non-null fields)
    if (request.getTitle() != null) {
        event.setTitle(request.getTitle());
    }
    // ... other fields

    // Update theme image if provided
    if (request.getThemeImageUploadId() != null) {
        associateThemeImage(event, request.getThemeImageUploadId());
    }

    Event patchedEvent = eventRepository.save(event);
    return mapToResponse(patchedEvent);
}

Validation:

  • Update event with new themeImageUploadId changes image
  • Patch event with themeImageUploadId changes image
  • Update/patch without themeImageUploadId preserves existing image
  • Error handling works

API Specification Tasks

Task 7: Update OpenAPI Spec

File: docs/api/events-api.openapi.yml

Implementation:

Validation:

  • YAML syntax valid
  • Swagger UI displays new fields
  • Example values make sense
  • Description explains the field purpose

Frontend Tasks

Task 8: Regenerate Frontend Types

Command: cd web-frontend && npm run generate:api-types

Files Modified:

  • web-frontend/src/types/generated/events-api.types.ts

Validation:

  • Types generated without errors
  • Event type includes themeImageUrl?: string
  • CreateEventRequest includes themeImageUploadId?: string
  • UpdateEventRequest includes themeImageUploadId?: string
  • PatchEventRequest includes themeImageUploadId?: string
  • TypeScript compilation succeeds

Task 9: Add Theme Image to EventCard

File: web-frontend/src/components/organizer/EventManagement/EventCard.tsx

Implementation:

typescript
export const EventCard: React.FC<EventCardProps> = ({ event, onEdit, onCardClick }) => {
  const { t } = useTranslation('events');
  // ... existing code ...

  return (
    <Card
      data-testid={`event-card-${event.eventCode}`}
      sx={{
        height: '100%',
        display: 'flex',
        flexDirection: 'column',
        cursor: 'pointer',
        '&:hover': {
          boxShadow: 6,
          transform: 'translateY(-4px)',
        },
      }}
      onClick={handleCardClick}
    >
      {/* Theme Image */}
      {event.themeImageUrl ? (
        <Box
          component="img"
          src={event.themeImageUrl}
          alt={`Theme image for ${event.title}`}
          loading="lazy"
          sx={{
            width: '100%',
            height: 200,
            objectFit: 'cover',
            backgroundColor: 'grey.200',
          }}
          onError={(e) => {
            // Fallback to gradient on error
            e.currentTarget.style.display = 'none';
          }}
        />
      ) : (
        <Box
          sx={{
            width: '100%',
            height: 200,
            background: 'linear-gradient(135deg, #667eea 0%, #764ba2 100%)',
          }}
        />
      )}

      <CardContent data-testid="event-card-content" sx={{ flexGrow: 1 }}>
        {/* ... existing content ... */}
      </CardContent>

      <CardActions sx={{ justifyContent: 'flex-end', px: 2, pb: 2 }}>
        {/* ... existing actions ... */}
      </CardActions>
    </Card>
  );
};

Validation:

  • Theme image displayed at top of card
  • Image has correct dimensions (200px height)
  • Fallback gradient shown when no image
  • Lazy loading works
  • Error handling works (broken image URL)

Task 10: Add Theme Image to Event Detail Screen

File: Find and update the event detail page component (likely EventDetailPage.tsx or similar)

Implementation:

typescript
export const EventDetailPage: React.FC = () => {
  const { eventCode } = useParams<{ eventCode: string }>();
  const { data: event, isLoading } = useEvent(eventCode);

  if (isLoading) return <CircularProgress />;
  if (!event) return <Alert severity="error">Event not found</Alert>;

  return (
    <Box>
      {/* Page Title */}
      <Typography variant="h4" component="h1" gutterBottom>
        {event.title}
      </Typography>

      {/* Theme Image - Full Width */}
      {event.themeImageUrl ? (
        <Box
          component="img"
          src={event.themeImageUrl}
          alt={`Theme image for ${event.title}`}
          sx={{
            width: '100%',
            height: { xs: 200, md: 400 },
            objectFit: 'cover',
            borderRadius: 2,
            mb: 3,
            backgroundColor: 'grey.200',
          }}
        />
      ) : (
        <Box
          sx={{
            width: '100%',
            height: { xs: 200, md: 400 },
            borderRadius: 2,
            mb: 3,
            background: 'linear-gradient(135deg, #667eea 0%, #764ba2 100%)',
          }}
        />
      )}

      {/* Event Information Card */}
      <Paper sx={{ p: 3, mb: 3 }}>
        {/* ... existing event details ... */}
      </Paper>

      {/* ... rest of page ... */}
    </Box>
  );
};

Validation:

  • Theme image displayed full-width below title
  • Responsive height (200px mobile, 400px desktop)
  • Fallback gradient when no image
  • Image loads immediately (no lazy loading)

Task 11: Add FileUpload Component to EventForm

File: web-frontend/src/components/organizer/EventManagement/EventForm.tsx

Implementation:

typescript
import { FileUpload } from '@/components/shared/FileUpload/FileUpload';

export const EventForm: React.FC<EventFormProps> = ({ open, mode, event, onClose, onSuccess }) => {
  const { t } = useTranslation('events');
  const [themeImageUploadId, setThemeImageUploadId] = useState<string | undefined>(
    event?.themeImageUploadId
  );

  const handleThemeImageUploadSuccess = (data: { uploadId: string }) => {
    setThemeImageUploadId(data.uploadId);
  };

  const handleThemeImageUploadError = (error: { type: string; message: string }) => {
    setApiError(t(`errors.${error.type}`, { defaultValue: error.message }));
  };

  const handleCreate = async (data: EventFormData, isDraft = false) => {
    // ... existing code ...

Validation:

  • FileUpload component renders at bottom of form
  • Shows current theme image (if exists)
  • Upload follows three-phase pattern
  • Progress indicator works
  • Success updates uploadId state
  • Error displays to user
  • Form submission includes themeImageUploadId

Task 12: Add Translation Keys

Files:

  • web-frontend/public/locales/en/events.json
  • web-frontend/public/locales/de/events.json

Implementation:

English (en/events.json):

json
{
  "form": {
    // ... existing keys ...
    "themeImage": "Event Theme Image",
    "themeImageHelp": "Upload a theme image for this event (PNG, JPEG, or SVG, max 5MB). Recommended size: 1920x400px."
  },
  "errors": {
    // ... existing keys ...
    "imageUploadFailed": "Failed to upload theme image",
    "imageTooBig": "Image file is too large (max 5MB)",
    "imageInvalidType": "Invalid image type (use PNG, JPEG, or SVG)"
  }
}

German (de/events.json):

json
{
  "form": {
    // ... existing keys ...
    "themeImage": "Veranstaltungs-Themenbild",
    "themeImageHelp": "Laden Sie ein Themenbild fรผr diese Veranstaltung hoch (PNG, JPEG oder SVG, max. 5MB). Empfohlene GrรถรŸe: 1920x400px."
  },
  "errors": {
    // ... existing keys ...
    "imageUploadFailed": "Fehler beim Hochladen des Themenbilds",
    "imageTooBig": "Bilddatei ist zu groรŸ (max. 5MB)",
    "imageInvalidType": "Ungรผltiger Bildtyp (verwenden Sie PNG, JPEG oder SVG)"
  }
}

Validation:

  • Translation keys exist in both languages
  • Translations are accurate
  • No JSON syntax errors

Change Log

2025-11-04 Session 6 - Bug Fix: Theme Image Persistence (COMPLETE):

  • Fixed critical bug where uploaded theme images werenโ€™t persisting when dialog reopened

  • Root Cause Analysis:

    1. themeImageUploadId was missing from Event response schema (only themeImageUrl was returned)
    2. Frontend state initialization ran only on component mount, not dialog reopen
    3. PATCH request didnโ€™t include themeImageUploadId in payload
  • Complete Solution:

    1. OpenAPI Spec (docs/api/events-api.openapi.yml):

      • Added themeImageUploadId to Event schema (alongside themeImageUrl)
      • Both fields now returned in all event responses (GET, POST, PATCH)
    2. Backend DTO (EventResponse.java):

      • Added themeImageUploadId field to EventResponse
      • Updated fromEntity() mapper to include themeImageUploadId
    3. Backend Controller (EventController.java):

      • Updated buildBasicEventResponse() to include themeImageUploadId if present
      • All endpoints now return both themeImageUrl AND themeImageUploadId
    4. Frontend Types:

      • Regenerated types from updated OpenAPI spec
      • Event type now properly includes themeImageUploadId?: string | null
    5. Frontend State Management (EventForm.tsx):

      • Added useEffect to initialize themeImageUploadId from event when dialog opens in edit mode
      • Clear upload ID when creating new event
      • Fixed PATCH request to always include themeImageUploadId when defined
      • Fixed currentFileUrl prop to handle null values from API
  • Testing: Bug reported during manual testing, fixed and verified โœ…

  • Impact: Theme images now persist correctly across dialog open/close cycles

2025-11-04 Session 5 - EventForm Unit Tests:

  • Added 8 unit tests to EventForm.test.tsx for FileUpload integration:
    • should_displayThemeImageSection_when_formRendered

  • Renamed theme image migration from V7 to V6 (sequential after V5)
  • Added 3 integration tests to EventControllerIntegrationTest:
    • should_storeThemeImageUploadId_when_uploadIdProvided
    • should_createEventWithoutThemeImage_when_uploadIdNotProvided
    • should_updateThemeImageUploadId_when_patchingWithUploadId
  • Updated EventController.buildBasicEventResponse() to include themeImageUrl
  • Added S3Client mock to TestAwsConfig for GenericLogoService
  • Enabled spring.main.allow-bean-definition-overriding in test properties
  • All 3 backend integration tests passing โœ…

2025-11-04 Session 2 - Frontend Integration:

  • Integrated FileUpload component into EventForm
  • Added complete translation keys for EN and DE:
    • form.themeImage, form.themeImageHelp, form.themeImageAlt, form.removeThemeImage
    • errors.imageUploadFailed, errors.imageTooBig, errors.imageInvalidType
    • errors.MULTIPLE_FILES, errors.FILE_TOO_LARGE, errors.INVALID_FILE_TYPE
  • Updated EventForm to pass themeImageUploadId during create and update operations
  • Frontend upload flow complete: FileUpload โ†’ presigned URL โ†’ S3 โ†’ confirm โ†’ form submission

2025-11-04 Session 1 - Backend & Display:

  • Created database migration adding theme_image_url and theme_image_upload_id columns
  • Extended Event entity with theme image fields
  • Updated all DTOs (Create, Update, Patch, Response) to include theme image fields
  • Implemented GenericLogoService in event-management-service using shared database pattern
  • Added AWS S3 SDK dependencies to event-management-service
  • Updated EventController to handle theme image association in create/update/patch
  • Updated OpenAPI spec with theme image fields in all event schemas
  • Regenerated frontend TypeScript types
  • Added theme image display to EventCard (200px banner)
  • Added theme image display to EventDetail page (400px desktop, 200px mobile hero banner)
  • Backend API is production-ready and follows ADR-002 three-phase upload pattern

Notes

Architecture Decision

This story follows ADR-002 (Generic File Upload Service) three-phase pattern:

  1. Frontend uploads to S3 via presigned URL (no entity required)
  2. Frontend confirms upload
  3. Backend associates logo with event during create/update

Key Benefits

  • Reuses existing infrastructure: GenericLogoService handles all file operations
  • No entity coupling: Theme images can be uploaded before event exists
  • Automatic cleanup: Orphaned uploads removed after 24h (PENDING) or 7d (CONFIRMED)
  • CDN delivery: CloudFront serves images with 1-year cache
  • Error resilience: Event creation succeeds even if image association fails

Image Specifications

  • Max Size: 5 MB
  • Formats: PNG, JPEG, SVG
  • Recommended Dimensions: 1920x400px (16:4.8 aspect ratio)
  • Display: 200px height on cards, 400px on detail page (desktop)

S3 Key Pattern

  • Temporary: logos/temp/{uploadId}/logo-{fileId}.{ext}
  • Final: logos/{year}/events/{eventCode}/theme-{uploadId}.{ext}

Error Handling

  • Theme image upload is optional - event creation succeeds even if upload fails
  • Broken image URLs fall back to gradient background
  • User-friendly error messages for upload failures

Future Enhancements

  • Image optimization (auto-resize, WebP conversion)
  • Multiple event images (gallery)
  • Image cropping tool in upload component
  • Background image variants for different themes
