Story 1.2.2a: Implement Reset Password Confirmation
Status
Done
Story
As a user who has received a password reset code, I want to enter the code and set a new password in my preferred language, so that I can regain access to my account securely.
Context: This story implements the Reset Password CONFIRMATION flow. This is PART 2 of the password reset flow. Users arrive here after requesting a reset in Story 1.2.2, receiving a 6-digit code via email from Cognito.
Dependencies:
- BLOCKS: Story 1.2.1 (i18n Foundation) - Requires react-i18next configuration
- BLOCKS: Story 1.2.2 (Forgot Password Request) - Users receive code from this flow
CRITICAL: Check Existing Frontend Structure First
Before implementing, verify these existing patterns:
-
Auth Service Pattern (
web-frontend/src/services/auth/authService.ts)- Uses AWS Amplify v6 (NOT raw Cognito SDK)
- Pattern: Direct Cognito integration (NO backend proxy)
- IMPORTANT: Use Amplifyβs
confirmResetPassworddirectly
-
Hook Pattern (
web-frontend/src/hooks/)- Each hook in own folder:
useResetPassword/ - Structure:
useResetPassword.ts,useResetPassword.test.ts,index.ts
- Each hook in own folder:
-
Routing Pattern (
web-frontend/src/App.tsx)- Existing routes:
/login,/auth/forgot-password,/auth/register - ADD:
/auth/reset-passwordroute (receives code via query params or user entry)
- Existing routes:
-
Translation Structure (
public/locales/{en,de}/auth.json)- Existing keys:
login,forgot,signup,register,verify - Add
resetkey for confirmation screen
- Existing keys:
-
Component Pattern (see
LoginForm/,ForgotPasswordForm/)- Folder structure:
ResetPasswordForm/ResetPasswordForm.tsx - Uses React Hook Form + Zod + Material-UI
- Password strength validation (reuse from registration)
- Folder structure:

Architecture Context
Architecture Patterns
- Frontend Architecture (
docs/architecture/05-frontend-architecture.md):- React 18.2+ with TypeScript
- Material-UI components
- React Hook Form for form state
- Zod for validation
- React Query for API mutations
- i18next for internationalization (from Story 1.2.1)
Infrastructure Components
- AWS Amplify v6:
confirmResetPasswordfunction (direct client-side integration) - AWS Cognito: Password confirmation handling
- Verification Code: 6-digit numeric from email (Story 1.2.2)
- Code Expiration: 1 hour (Cognito default)
Acceptance Criteria
Reset Password Confirmation Screen
- Email Display: Show email address (from URL param or state)
- Code Input Field: 6-digit verification code input (text or numeric)
- New Password Field: Password field with visibility toggle
- Confirm Password Field: Password confirmation with visibility toggle
- Password Strength Indicator: Real-time password strength feedback (weak/medium/strong)
- Password Requirements: Display password requirements (8+ chars, uppercase, lowercase, number)

- Back to Login Link: Navigation to return to login screen
Form Validation
- Code Validation: Required, exactly 6 digits
- Password Validation: Minimum 8 characters, uppercase, lowercase, number
- Password Match: Confirm password must match new password
- Client-Side Validation: Validate before submission
- Real-Time Feedback: Show validation errors as user types
AWS Amplify v6 Integration
- Confirm Reset Password API: Call Amplify v6
confirmResetPassword({ username, confirmationCode, newPassword }) - Success Handling: Redirect to login screen with success message
- Auto-Login Option: Optionally sign in user automatically after successful reset
Error Handling

Code Quality Assessment
Overall Grade: EXCELLENT
This implementation demonstrates exemplary TDD practices with comprehensive test coverage across all acceptance criteria. The code follows established patterns from Story 1.2.1, uses Amplify v6 direct integration correctly, and implements proper error handling for all Cognito exception types.
Strengths:
- Perfect TDD Adherence: Clear RED-GREEN-REFACTOR workflow with 32 unit tests + 18 E2E tests
- Security Best Practices: Proper Amplify v6 integration, comprehensive error mapping, rate limiting support
- Accessibility Excellence: WCAG 2.1 AA compliance with keyboard navigation, ARIA labels, and proper focus management
- Full i18n Support: Complete bilingual implementation (EN/DE) with all UI text properly localized
- Auto-Login Feature: Thoughtful implementation with graceful fallback to login screen on failure
Areas for Future Enhancement:
- Auto-login logic could be extracted to a reusable hook (low priority)
- Error message mapping could be centralized (low priority)
- Troubleshooting guide deferred (acceptable - can be added based on production feedback)
Refactoring Performed
β
Password Strength Utility Extraction (web-frontend/src/utils/passwordStrength.ts)
- Change: Created reusable
calculatePasswordStrength(),getPasswordStrengthColor(), andgetPasswordStrengthValue()utilities - Why: Password strength logic was duplicated inline and not reusable for future password forms (e.g., registration)
- How: Extracted 35 lines of inline logic to dedicated utility module with proper TypeScript types and JSDoc documentation
- Impact: Improved maintainability and enables reuse in Story 1.2.3 (registration) and future password features
β
Console.log Removal (useResetPassword.ts, ResetPasswordForm.tsx)
- Change: Removed 4 informational console.log statements
- Why: Coding Standards (lines 360+) specify production code should not contain debug logging
- How: Removed success logging while preserving console.error for actual error conditions
- Impact: Cleaner production builds, maintains proper separation between development debugging and production code
β
Function Simplification (ResetPasswordForm.tsx)
- Change: Refactored ResetPasswordForm to use password strength utilities
- Why: Eliminated duplicate helper functions and reduced component complexity
- How: Replaced inline
getPasswordStrengthColor()andgetPasswordStrengthValue()with imported utilities - Impact: Reduced component from 394 to 360 lines (-34 lines), improved maintainability

Security Review
Authentication Flow Security: EXCELLENT
- Uses AWS Amplify v6
confirmResetPasswordAPI (officially supported, maintained by AWS) - No custom cryptography or token handling (follows AWS best practices)
- Proper error type mapping prevents information leakage
- Rate limiting supported via Cognitoβs
LimitExceededException
Input Validation Security:
- 6-digit code validation (prevents injection attempts)
- Password complexity requirements (8+ chars, upper, lower, number)
- Password match validation (prevents typos)
- Client-side + server-side validation (Cognito enforces policy)
Session Security:
- Auto-login uses
rememberMe: false(no persistent session storage) - Password not stored or logged
- Proper redirect flow prevents session fixation
No Critical Security Issues Found
Performance Considerations
Frontend Performance:
- Real-time password strength calculation: ~1ms (negligible)
- Form validation: Client-side (no API overhead)
