Story 1.2.2: Implement Forgot Password Flow
Status
Done
Story
As a user who has forgotten their password, I want to request a password reset code via email in my preferred language, so that I can securely regain access to my account without administrator intervention.
Context: This story implements the Forgot Password REQUEST flow specified in wireframe story-1.2-forgot-password.md. This is PART 1 of the password reset flow - requesting the code. See Story 1.2.2a for PART 2 - confirming the reset with code and new password.
Dependencies:
- BLOCKS: Story 1.2.1 (i18n Foundation) - Requires react-i18next configuration and translation files
Related Stories:
- Story 1.2.2a - Password Reset Confirmation (entering code and new password)
CRITICAL: Architecture Change (October 2025)
IMPORTANT: This story was UPDATED to align with Stories 1.2.3 and 1.2.4 architecture pattern.
OLD Architecture (deprecated):
Frontend β Backend API Gateway β Cognito
NEW Architecture (current):
Frontend β Amplify v6 β Cognito (direct)
What Changed:
- β REMOVED: Backend
/api/v1/auth/forgot-passwordendpoint - β REMOVED:
PasswordResetService.java, rate limiting, audit logging - β REMOVED: AWS SES custom templates
- β
ADDED: Direct Amplify v6
resetPassword()integration - β ADDED: Cognito User Pool email template configuration
Existing Implementation:
- The current codebase still has backend implementation
- Mark for removal:
PasswordResetService.java,RateLimitService.java,EmailService.java - Update:
useForgotPasswordhook to use Amplify v6 instead of backend API
CRITICAL: Check Existing Frontend Structure First
Before implementing, verify these existing patterns:
-
Auth Service Pattern (
web-frontend/src/services/auth/authService.ts)- Uses AWS Amplify v6 (NOT raw Cognito SDK)
- Pattern: Direct Cognito integration (NO backend proxy)
- IMPORTANT: Use Amplifyβs
resetPassworddirectly
-
Hook Pattern (
web-frontend/src/hooks/)- Each hook in own folder:
useForgotPassword/ - Structure:
useForgotPassword.ts,useForgotPassword.test.ts,index.ts
- Each hook in own folder:
-
Routing Pattern (
web-frontend/src/App.tsx)- Existing routes:
/login,/auth/forgot-password,/auth/register - Pattern: Uses React.lazy() for public routes
- Existing routes:
-
Translation Structure (
public/locales/{en,de}/auth.json)- Existing keys:
login,forgot,signup,register,verify - Update
forgotkey for request screen
- Existing keys:
-
Component Pattern (see
LoginForm/)- Folder structure:
ForgotPasswordForm/ForgotPasswordForm.tsx - Uses React Hook Form + Zod + Material-UI
- Folder structure:
Domain Context
Primary Domain
- Shared/Infrastructure (Authentication & Password Recovery)
Involved Services
- web-frontend (React Forgot Password components with Amplify v6)
- AWS Cognito (password reset code generation and email delivery - direct integration)
Cross-Domain Dependencies
- AWS Cognito User Pools (
resetPasswordAPI via Amplify v6) - Cognito User Pool email templates (NOT AWS SES - Cognito handles email delivery)
Requirements Context
Related Functional Requirements
- FR1: Role-based authentication (password recovery for all roles)
- NFR3: Integration with AWS Cognito (direct via Amplify v6)
- NFR4: Multi-language support (German/English emails via Cognito templates and UI via i18next)
Related Wireframes
- Primary:
docs/wireframes/story-1.2-forgot-password.md- Email input screen (request view)
- Confirmation screen (success view)
- Bilingual AWS SES email templates
- Resend functionality with cooldown
- Security: Email enumeration prevention
Architecture Context
Architecture Patterns
- Frontend Architecture (
docs/architecture/05-frontend-architecture.md):- React 18.2+ with TypeScript
- Material-UI components
- React Hook Form for form state
- React Query for API mutations
- i18next for internationalization (from Story 1.2.1)
Infrastructure Components
- AWS Amplify v6:
resetPasswordfunction (direct client-side integration) - AWS Cognito User Pool: Password reset configuration (built-in email templates)
- Verification Code: 6-digit numeric, 1-hour expiration (Cognito managed)
- Email Format: Cognito sends code automatically, user enters code in Story 1.2.2a confirmation screen
- Code Expiration: 1 hour (Cognito default)
Acceptance Criteria
Forgot Password Request Screen
- Email Input Field: Email field with validation (required, valid format, max 255 chars)
- Send Reset Link Button: Primary action that triggers password reset flow
- Form Validation: Client-side validation for email format before submission
- Loading State: Button shows spinner and βSendingβ¦β text during API request
- Back to Login Navigation: Link to return to login screen
Confirmation Screen (After Successful Request)
- Success Message: Display confirmation with masked email address (u***@example.com)
- Resend Functionality: Allow user to resend reset link if email not received
- Resend Cooldown: 60-second cooldown between resend attempts
- Back to Login Link: Navigation to return to login screen
- Help Text: Instructions to check spam folder
AWS Amplify v6 Integration
- Reset Password API: Call Amplify v6
resetPassword({ username: email })directly from frontend - Email Enumeration Prevention: Always show success message, never reveal if email exists in system (Cognito behavior)
- Rate Limiting: Cognito built-in rate limiting (default: 5 attempts per hour)
- Code Delivery: Cognito automatically sends 6-digit code to userβs email
Bilingual Email Templates (Cognito User Pool)
- German Email Template: Configure Cognito User Pool password reset email in German with code placeholder
{####} - English Email Template: Configure Cognito User Pool password reset email in English with code placeholder
{####} - Language Detection: Cognito sends email based on userβs
custom:languageattribute - Email Content: Subject, body, 6-digit code, 1-hour expiration notice
Error Handling
- Invalid Email Error: Display localized error for invalid email format
- Rate Limit Error: Display error message and countdown timer when rate limit exceeded
- Network Error: Display error with retry option for connection failures
- Generic Error: Fallback error message for unexpected failures

Task 1: AWS SES Email Template Setup (Infrastructure)
Task 1a: Custom Message Lambda Trigger (Infrastructure - FIX MISSING EMAIL TEMPLATES)
CRITICAL: This task fixes the issue where Cognito sends plain verification codes instead of branded emails
- Create Lambda function:
- Implement
CustomMessage_ForgotPassword - Detect user language from
custom:language - Build reset link:
- Call SES to send email with template
- Pass
resetLink - Wire Lambda trigger to Cognito User Pool in
- Update IAM permissions for Lambda to send SES emails (
ses:SendTemplatedEmail,ses:SendEmail - Add environment variables:
FRONTEND_DOMAIN,SES_TEMPLATE_PREFIX, - Write unit tests:
infrastructure/lib/lambda/triggers/__tests__/custom-message.test.ts
Task 2: Backend API Endpoint (RED Phase)
- Write failing integration test for
/api/v1/auth/forgot-password - Write failing test for Cognito

Dev Notes - Implementation Guide
SOLUTION: Custom Message Lambda Trigger (Task 1a)
CRITICAL ISSUE IDENTIFIED (2025-10-24):
- Cognito is sending plain verification codes (βThe verification code to your new account is 258936β)
- SES templates in
ses-stack.tsexist but are NEVER used by Cognito - Root cause: No
CustomMessageLambda trigger configured incognito-stack.ts
SOLUTION APPROACH:
Use AWS Cognitoβs CustomMessage Lambda trigger to intercept ForgotPassword events and send custom SES emails with branded templates and clickable reset links.
Implementation Pattern:
// infrastructure/lib/lambda/triggers/custom-message.ts
import { CustomMessageTriggerEvent } from 'aws-lambda';
import { SESClient, SendTemplatedEmailCommand } from '@aws-sdk/client-ses';
export const handler = async (event: CustomMessageTriggerEvent) => {
// Only intercept ForgotPassword trigger
if (event.triggerSource === 'CustomMessage_ForgotPassword') {
const { email, userAttributes, codeParameter } = event.request;
const language = userAttributes['custom:language'] || 'en';
const code = codeParameter;
// Build reset link
const resetLink = `${process.env.FRONTEND_DOMAIN}/auth/reset-password?code=${code}&email=${encodeURIComponent(email)}&lang=${language}`;
// Send SES email with template
const sesClient = new SESClient({});
const templateName = `${process.env.SES_TEMPLATE_PREFIX}-PasswordReset-${language.toUpperCase()}`;
await sesClient.send(new SendTemplatedEmailCommand({
Source: process.env.FROM_EMAIL,
Destination: { ToAddresses: [email] },
Template: templateName,
TemplateData: JSON.stringify({ resetLink }),
}));
// Suppress Cognito's default email
event.response.emailSubject = '';
event.response.emailMessage = '';
}
return event;
};
Wire to Cognito Stack:
// infrastructure/lib/stacks/cognito-stack.ts (add to user pool configuration)
const customMessageTrigger = new lambda.Function(this, 'CustomMessageTrigger', {
runtime: lambda.Runtime.NODEJS_20_X,
handler: 'custom-message.handler',
code: lambda.Code.fromAsset('lib/lambda/triggers'),
environment: {
FRONTEND_DOMAIN: props.frontendDomain,
SES_TEMPLATE_PREFIX: `BATbern-${props.envName}`,
FROM_EMAIL: 'noreply@berner-architekten-treffen.ch',
},
});
// Grant SES permissions
customMessageTrigger.addToRolePolicy(new iam.PolicyStatement({
actions: ['ses:SendTemplatedEmail'],
resources: ['*'],
}));
// Wire to user pool
userPool.addTrigger(cognito.UserPoolOperation.CUSTOM_MESSAGE, customMessageTrigger);
Benefits:
- β Uses existing SES templates (no duplicate template management)
- β Clickable reset links (better UX than typing codes)
- β
Bilingual support (reads
custom:languageattribute) - β Branded emails with HTML styling
- β Suppresses Cognitoβs plain text default email
- β Follows existing Lambda trigger pattern (PostConfirmation, PreTokenGeneration)
β DEPRECATED: Cognito User Pool Email Template Configuration
This approach is OUTDATED - Cognitoβs built-in templates donβt support HTML or clickable links.
German Template (Configure in Cognito):
Subject: Passwort zurΓΌcksetzen fΓΌr Ihr BATbern-Konto

CDK Configuration Example (add to cognito-stack.ts):
const userPool = new cognito.UserPool(this, 'UserPool', {
// ... other settings
userVerification: {
// ... email verification settings
},
// Password reset email settings
accountRecovery: cognito.AccountRecovery.EMAIL_ONLY,

- For multi-instance production, implement database-backed rate limiting or API Gateway-level rate limiting
- Example: Use
CacheManagerwith Caffeine for improved memory management and automatic expiration
- Estimated Effort: 4-6 hours (Caffeine), 8-12 hours (database-backed for multi-instance)
- Story: Consider follow-up story for scaled production deployment
- File:

Security Review
Strengths β
-
Email Enumeration Prevention: Excellent implementation
- Always returns same success message
- Logs failures separately (audit trail)
- No timing attacks possible (same code path)
-
Rate Limiting: Well-implemented for single instance
- 3 requests per hour per email
- Combined limit for forgot + resend
- Proper headers in response (Retry-After, X-RateLimit-*)
-
Audit Logging: Comprehensive security logging
- All attempts logged with IP address
- Email addresses masked in logs
- Status tracked (SUCCESS, USER_NOT_FOUND, RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED, FAILURE)
-
Input Validation: Proper validation layers
- Frontend: React Hook Form validation
- Backend: Jakarta Bean Validation (@NotBlank, @Email, @Size)
- Max email length: 255 characters
Concerns β οΈ
-
Verification Code Transmission: Needs review
- Current implementation unclear on how code reaches user
- Potential for two emails (Cognito + SES)
- Should be validated in E2E tests
-
Rate Limiting Scalability: Single instance only
- Can be bypassed with load balancer (round-robin to different instances)
- For multi-instance production, needs database-backed or API Gateway-level rate limiting
-
No CAPTCHA: Allows automated attacks
- Attackers can cycle through email addresses
- 3 requests per email still allows enumeration at scale
- Recommendation: Add CAPTCHA as future enhancement
Performance Considerations
Current Performance β
- Frontend Bundle: +50 lines for ExtendedError type (negligible)
- API Latency: Rate limit check adds <1ms (HashMap lookup)
- Memory Usage: ~100 bytes per email tracked (1,000 emails = 100KB)
- Network: Minimal (single API call per request)
Optimization Opportunities
-
Backend Cleanup: RateLimitService doesnβt have scheduled cleanup
- Old entries removed on access (lazy cleanup)
- Could add scheduled task to clear expired entries
- Impact: Low (in-memory map is small)
-
Frontend Caching: React Query could cache success responses
- Currently, each submission triggers fresh API call
- Could cache for 60 seconds to prevent double submissions
- Impact: Medium (better UX)

- Extract email masking logic to shared utility (used in multiple places)
- Extract rate limit configuration to
application.ymlfor easier tuning - Consider extracting verification code handling to separate service
