Story 1.2.1: Fix Login Screen & Add i18n Foundation
Status
Done
Story
As a user of any role (Organizer, Speaker, Partner, Attendee), I want a complete login screen with multi-language support from day 1, so that I can authenticate in my preferred language (German or English) with all expected features including password visibility toggle and session persistence.
Context: This story corrects Story 1.2 (API Gateway & Authentication Service) which was implemented before wireframes existed. The current login implementation is missing critical features specified in the wireframe (story-1.2-login-screen.md).
Domain Context
Primary Domain
- Shared/Infrastructure (Cross-cutting concern: Authentication & i18n)
- All Domain Boundaries (i18n foundation affects all services)
Involved Services
- web-frontend (React application)
- API Gateway (authentication flow already implemented, needs i18n header support)
Cross-Domain Dependencies
- AWS Cognito (existing authentication service - no changes needed)
- All future frontend components (will use i18n foundation)
Requirements Context
Related Functional Requirements
- FR1: Role-based authentication with AWS Cognito
- FR22: All users created as ATTENDEE role initially
- NFR4: Multi-language support from MVP launch (German de-CH and English en-US)
Related Wireframes
- Primary:
docs/wireframes/story-1.2-login-screen.md- Language selector (π EN βΌ | DE) in header
- Email and password fields with validation
- Password show/hide toggle (π icon)
- βRemember meβ checkbox
- Role-based dashboard redirect after authentication
Architecture Context
Architecture Patterns
- Frontend Architecture (
docs/architecture/05-frontend-architecture.md):- i18next + react-i18next for internationalization
- Material-UI components for UI elements
- React Hook Form for form state management
- Zustand for global auth state
- React Query for API calls
Infrastructure Components
- i18n Framework: react-i18next ^14.0.0, i18next-browser-languagedetector ^7.2.0
- Translation Files:
/public/locales/de/*.jsonand/public/locales/en/*.json - Language Detection: localStorage β browser language β default (de-CH)
- Language Persistence: localStorage (
batbern-languagekey) + user profile after login
Acceptance Criteria
i18n Foundation (Critical - Must Complete First)
- i18n Framework Installation: Install and configure react-i18next, i18next-browser-languagedetector with TypeScript type safety
- Translation File Structure: Create namespace-based translation files (
common.json,auth.json,validation.json) for both de and en - Language Detection: Auto-detect browser locale on first visit, default to German (de-CH) if no preference
- Language Persistence: Store selected language in localStorage (
batbern-languagekey) and sync with user profile after login - TypeScript Type Safety: Configure TypeScript types for translation keys with compile-time validation
Login Screen UI Fixes
- Language Selector: Add dropdown in header (π EN βΌ | DE) that switches language immediately without page refresh
- Email Field: Email input with proper validation (required, email format, max 255 chars)
- Password Field: Password input with validation (required, min 8 chars, max 128 chars)
- Password Toggle: Add show/hide password button (π icon) that toggles password visibility
- Remember Me Checkbox: Add βRemember meβ checkbox that controls session persistence
- Form Labels & Text: All UI text uses translation keys (no hard-coded strings)
- Error Messages: All validation and authentication errors display in selected language
Authentication Flow Integration
- Cognito Integration: Maintain existing AWS Cognito authentication (no backend changes)
- Session Management: βRemember meβ checked β secure localStorage; unchecked β session storage
- Role-Based Redirect: After login, redirect to role-specific dashboard (Organizer/Speaker/Partner/Attendee)
- Language Header: Pass Accept-Language header to API Gateway for server-side localization

Updated Authentication Hook
src/hooks/useAuth.ts - Add βRemember meβ logic:
import { create } from 'zustand';
import { persist } from 'zustand/middleware';
interface AuthState {
user: User | null;
accessToken: string | null;
refreshToken: string | null;
isAuthenticated: boolean;
login: (email: string, password: string, rememberMe: boolean) => Promise<void>;
logout: () => void;
}
export const useAuthStore = create<AuthState>()(
persist(
(set, get) => ({
user: null,
accessToken: null,
refreshToken: null,
isAuthenticated: false,
login: async (email: string, password: string, rememberMe: boolean) => {
// Call Cognito authentication
const { accessToken, refreshToken, user } = await authenticateWithCognito(email, password);
// Store tokens based on "Remember me" setting
if (rememberMe) {
// Use localStorage (persisted)
localStorage.setItem('batbern-tokens', JSON.stringify({ accessToken, refreshToken }));
} else {
// Use sessionStorage (expires on browser close)
sessionStorage.setItem('batbern-tokens', JSON.stringify({ accessToken, refreshToken }));
}
set({
user,
accessToken,
refreshToken,
isAuthenticated: true
});
// Redirect to role-based dashboard
const dashboard = getRoleDashboard(user.role);
window.location.href = dashboard;
},
logout: () => {
localStorage.removeItem('batbern-tokens');
sessionStorage.removeItem('batbern-tokens');
set({ user: null, accessToken: null, refreshToken: null, isAuthenticated: false });
}
}),
{
name: 'auth-storage',
partialize: (state) => ({
user: state.user,
isAuthenticated: state.isAuthenticated
})
}
)
);
API Client Update - Language Header
src/services/apiClient.ts:
import axios from 'axios';
import i18n from '@/i18n/config';
const apiClient = axios.create({
baseURL: import.meta.env.VITE_API_BASE_URL
});
// Add Accept-Language header to all requests
apiClient.interceptors.request.use((config) => {
config.headers['Accept-Language'] = i18n.language;
return config;
});
export default apiClient;
Testing Patterns
Translation Test Example:
// LoginForm.test.tsx
import { render, screen } from '@testing-library/react';
import { I18nextProvider } from 'react-i18next';
import i18n from '@/i18n/config';
import LoginForm from './LoginForm';
describe('LoginForm with i18n', () => {
it('should_displayGermanText_when_languageIsGerman', async () => {
await i18n.changeLanguage('de');
render(
<I18nextProvider i18n={i18n}>
<LoginForm />
</I18nextProvider>
);
expect(screen.getByText('Willkommen zurΓΌck')).toBeInTheDocument();
expect(screen.getByLabelText('E-Mail-Adresse')).toBeInTheDocument();
expect(screen.getByRole('button', { name: 'Anmelden' })).toBeInTheDocument();
});
it('should_displayEnglishText_when_languageIsEnglish', async () => {
await i18n.changeLanguage('en');
render(
<I18nextProvider i18n={i18n}>
<LoginForm />
</I18nextProvider>
);
expect(screen.getByText('Welcome Back')).toBeInTheDocument();
expect(screen.getByLabelText('Email Address')).toBeInTheDocument();
expect(screen.getByRole('button', { name: 'Sign In' })).toBeInTheDocument();
});
});

Implementation Approach
Implemented i18n foundation with react-i18next following TDD approach:
- Installed i18next, react-i18next, and i18next-browser-languagedetector dependencies
- Created namespace-based translation structure (common, auth, validation) for German (de-CH) and English (en-US)
- Configured i18next with language detection (localStorage β browser β default de)
- Added TypeScript type safety for translation keys using module augmentation
- Created LanguageSwitcher component with Material-UI Select for header integration
- Updated LoginForm component with i18n support, password visibility toggle (eye icon), and enhanced UX
- Created API client with Accept-Language header interceptor for server-side localization
- Initialized i18n in main.tsx before React render for immediate availability
- Implemented βRemember meβ session persistence using Amplify V6:
- Configured Amplifyβs cognitoUserPoolsTokenProvider.setKeyValueStorage() to control token storage location
- rememberMe checked β Amplify uses localStorage (persists across browser sessions)
- rememberMe unchecked β Amplify uses sessionStorage (expires on browser close)
- Removed manual token storage (Amplify V6 manages tokens internally including refresh tokens)
- All tests passing (62/62) including new i18n, LoginForm, authentication, and API client tests
- QA Fixes (2025-10-05):
- Refactored to proper Amplify V6 token management
- Fully localized validation messages and error messages
- Comprehensive API client test coverage (14 tests)
- Resolved all React Testing Library act() warnings
- Result: Zero warnings, production-ready code
QA Fixes Applied (2025-10-05)
After comprehensive QA review (Quality Score: 85/100, Gate: CONCERNS), addressed all 5 issues (3 MEDIUM + 2 LOW priority):
MEDIUM Priority Fixes:
AUTH-001: Refresh Token Handling
- Research confirmed AWS Amplify V6 manages refresh tokens internally - not exposed in fetchAuthSession
- Refactored authService to use Amplifyβs storage configuration API (cognitoUserPoolsTokenProvider.setKeyValueStorage)
- Removed refreshToken from interfaces (cleaned up types/auth.ts, SignInResult, TokenRefreshResponse)
- Updated tests to verify Amplify storage configuration rather than manual storage
- Result: Clean greenfield implementation aligned with Amplify V6 best practices
I18N-001: Validation Message Localization
- Created
createLoginSchema(t)factory function to generate localized Zod validation schemas - All form validation errors now properly localized (email.required, password.tooShort, etc.)
- Result: Complete i18n coverage - no hard-coded English messages in validation
TEST-001: API Client Test Coverage
- Created comprehensive apiClient.test.ts with 14 new tests
- Tests cover Accept-Language header injection, auth token retrieval, and error handling (401/403/500)
- Installed axios-mock-adapter for interceptor testing
- Result: Full test coverage for API client interceptors
LOW Priority Fixes:
TEST-002: React Testing Library act() Warnings
- Wrapped all test renders and user interactions in act() for proper async handling
- Fixed timing issues in LoginForm and useAuth tests
- Result: Zero act() warnings - clean test output
I18N-002: Error Message Localization
- Created getErrorTranslationKey() function to map Cognito error codes to i18n keys
- Updated LoginForm to display localized errors (invalidCredentials, emailNotVerified, accountLocked, etc.)
- Result: All error messages properly localized in German and English

Code Quality Assessment
The implementation demonstrates excellent architectural decisions and thorough execution of the i18n foundation and login screen enhancements. The codebase shows strong adherence to React and TypeScript best practices with comprehensive test coverage (49 tests passing across all test suites).
Highlights:
- Well-structured i18n configuration with namespace-based organization (common, auth, validation)
- Complete TypeScript type safety implementation including type augmentation for translation keys
- Proper separation of concerns with clean component architecture
- Excellent test coverage with meaningful test names following should_when pattern
- Language detection and persistence logic correctly implemented
- βRemember meβ functionality properly segregates localStorage vs sessionStorage
Overall Quality Score: 85/100
Refactoring Performed
File: src/services/auth/authService.ts
- Change: Added documentation comments at lines 107-109 and 256
- Why: Clarify potential issue with refresh token assignment (currently assigned same value as accessToken)
- How: Added TODO comments to prompt verification whether AWS Amplify V6 requires manual refresh token storage, as Amplify manages token refresh internally
- Impact: Improves code maintainability and flags potential architectural question for team discussion

Improvements Checklist
Issues Addressed by QA:
Recommendations for Development Team:
MEDIUM Priority (Should Address Before Production):
-
Verify Refresh Token Strategy
- Current:
refreshToken = accessToken.toString()assigns same value as accessToken - Concern: AWS Amplify V6 manages refresh tokens internally - manual storage may be unnecessary
- Action: Verify with Amplify V6 documentation if manual refresh token extraction/storage is required
- Suggested Owner: dev
- Current:
-
Localize Form Validation Messages
- Current: Zod schema uses hard-coded English messages
- Impact: Validation errors always appear in English regardless of selected language
- Action: Create validation schema factory using i18n, or move validation messages to useTranslation hook
- Example: Replace
'Email is required'witht('validation:email.required') - Suggested Owner: dev
-
Add API Client Tests
- Current: No unit tests for interceptors
- Missing Coverage:
- Accept-Language header injection (line 26)
- Authorization token retrieval from storage (line 29)
- Error handling for 401/403/500 responses (lines 52-64)
- Action: Create
apiClient.test.tswith test cases for all interceptor logic - Suggested Owner: dev
LOW Priority (Nice to Have):
-
Fix React Testing Library act() Warnings
- Some async state updates in tests not wrapped in act()
- Warnings appear in LoginForm and useAuth tests
- Action: Wrap user interactions and state changes in waitFor() or act()
- Suggested Owner: dev
-
Enhance Error Message Localization
- Current: Displays
error.messagedirectly without translation lookup - Action: Map Cognito error codes to i18n keys in auth.json errors namespace
- Would improve: User experience in non-English languages
- Suggested Owner: dev
- Current: Displays
Security Review
β PASS - No Critical Security Issues
Strengths:
- AWS Cognito integration properly maintained from Story 1.2
- Token storage appropriately segregated (localStorage for persistent, sessionStorage for temporary)
- Password fields correctly masked with toggle visibility option
- No sensitive data exposed in client-side logging
- HTTPS-only assumptions maintained for API communication
- Authorization header properly injected via interceptor
Minor Observations:
- Token retrieval in apiClient interceptor (line 29-31) reads directly from storage - acceptable but consider using auth state management for consistency
- 401 handling redirects to
/login(line 54) - ensure this route exists and is protected against redirect loops
Performance Considerations
β PASS - No Performance Concerns
Observations:
- i18n bundle size minimal (~50KB total for both languages)
- Translation loading is synchronous (using imports) - appropriate for MVP scale
- React.Suspense enabled for i18n (config.ts:43) - good for lazy loading future namespaces
- Language switching is immediate with no HTTP requests
- Form validation runs client-side with minimal overhead
Future Optimization Opportunities:
- Consider code-splitting translation namespaces if app grows beyond 10 namespaces
- Lazy load validation namespace only on form pages
Reliability Assessment
β CONCERNS - One Issue Requires Verification
Strengths:
- Comprehensive error handling in authService with proper error mapping
- Form validation prevents invalid submissions
- Fallback language (German) always available
- localStorage/sessionStorage access wrapped in try-catch implicitly via browser APIs
- Test coverage validates happy paths and error scenarios
Concerns:
- Refresh Token Handling (see Improvements above): Current implementation may not align with Amplify V6 best practices
- Missing API Client Tests: Error handling paths untested (401/403/500 scenarios)

Gate Status
Gate: CONCERNS β docs/qa/gates/1.2.1-fix-login-screen-add-i18n.yml
Risk Profile: Low-Medium (no critical blockers, 3 medium-priority improvements recommended)
Status Reason: Implementation is fundamentally sound with excellent i18n architecture and comprehensive test coverage. Three medium-priority issues warrant attention before production: (1) refresh token handling needs verification with Amplify V6 best practices, (2) validation messages should use i18n for full multilingual support, (3) API client interceptors lack test coverage. None are blocking for MVP, but addressing them improves production readiness.
Recommended Status
β Ready for Done (with follow-up items tracked)
Rationale:
- All 16 acceptance criteria met or substantially met
- 49 tests passing with strong coverage
- i18n foundation properly architected for future growth
- Code quality exceeds standards (85/100)
- Identified issues are improvements, not blockers
- Production-ready for MVP launch with noted follow-up items
Next Steps:
- Team reviews medium-priority recommendations
- Create follow-up story/technical debt tickets if deferring improvements
- Verify E2E test suite includes login flow with language switching
- Proceed with βDoneβ status once team acknowledges recommended improvements
Note to Story Owner: This story represents excellent work establishing the i18n foundation for BATbern. The architecture supports future growth (additional languages, namespaces) with minimal refactoring needed. The identified improvements are optimizations that enhance the already-solid implementation.
