Story

As a newly registered user, I want to verify my email address using a 6-digit code or email link in my preferred language, so that I can activate my account and access the BATbern platform.

Context: This story implements the Email Verification flow specified in wireframe story-1.2-email-verification.md. This functionality was completely missing from the original Story 1.2 implementation. Users arrive at this screen after successful registration (Story 1.2.3).

Dependencies:

  • BLOCKS: Story 1.2.1 (i18n Foundation) - Requires react-i18next configuration
  • BLOCKS: Story 1.2.3 (Account Creation) - Users navigate here after registration
  • DEPENDS ON: Story 1.2.5 (User Sync) - PostConfirmation Lambda assigns ATTENDEE role after verification

CRITICAL: Check Existing Frontend Structure First

Before implementing, verify these existing patterns:

  1. Auth Service Pattern (web-frontend/src/services/auth/authService.ts)

    • Uses AWS Amplify v6 (NOT raw Cognito SDK)
    • Already has signUp function
    • Pattern: Direct Cognito integration (NO backend proxy)
    • IMPORTANT: Use Amplify’s confirmSignUp and resendSignUpCode directly
  2. Hook Pattern (web-frontend/src/hooks/)

    • Each hook in own folder: useHookName/
    • Structure: hookName.ts, hookName.test.ts, index.ts
    • Example: useForgotPassword/useForgotPassword.ts
  3. Routing Pattern (web-frontend/src/App.tsx)

    • Existing routes: /login, /auth/forgot-password, /auth/register
    • Pattern: Uses React.lazy() for public routes
    • ADD: /auth/verify-email route
  4. Translation Structure (public/locales/{en,de}/auth.json)

    • Existing keys: login, forgot, signup, register
    • Add verify key at same level
  5. Post-Registration Flow (Story 1.2.3 integration)

    • RegistrationWizard completes β†’ signUp() returns { requiresConfirmation: true }
    • Navigate to: /auth/verify-email?email={email}
    • EmailVerification component extracts email from query param

Domain Context

Primary Domain

  • Shared/Infrastructure (Authentication & Email Verification)

Involved Services

  • web-frontend (React verification component with Amplify v6)
  • AWS Cognito (email verification and user confirmation - direct integration)
  • Cognito Email Templates (bilingual verification emails configured in User Pool)

Cross-Domain Dependencies

  • AWS Cognito User Pools (confirmSignUp and resendSignUpCode via Amplify v6)
  • Cognito User Pool email templates (NOT AWS SES - Cognito handles email delivery)

Requirements Context

  • FR1: Role-based authentication (email verification required before access)
  • NFR3: Integration with AWS Cognito (direct via Amplify v6)
  • NFR4: Multi-language support (German/English verification emails via Cognito templates and UI via i18next)
  • Primary: docs/wireframes/story-1.2-email-verification.md
    • 6-digit code input with auto-advance
    • Auto-submit when all digits entered
    • Alternative: Email link auto-verification
    • Resend functionality with cooldown
    • Success screen with auto-redirect to dashboard

Architecture Context

Architecture Patterns

  • Frontend Architecture (docs/architecture/05-frontend-architecture.md):
    • React 18.2+ with TypeScript
    • Material-UI for code input components
    • Custom code input with auto-advance logic
    • React Query for verification mutation
    • i18next for internationalization (from Story 1.2.1)

Infrastructure Components

  • AWS Amplify v6: confirmSignUp and resendSignUpCode functions (direct client-side integration)
  • AWS Cognito User Pool: Email verification configuration (built-in email templates)
  • Verification Code: 6-digit numeric, 24-hour expiration (Cognito managed)
  • Email Link Format: ${FRONTEND_URL}/auth/verify-email?code={####}&email={email} (configured in Cognito template)
  • Auto-Verification: Extract code from URL and auto-submit

Acceptance Criteria

Code Input Interface

  1. 6-Digit Input Boxes: Six individual input fields for verification code
  2. Auto-Advance: Automatically move focus to next box when digit entered
  3. Paste Support: Allow pasting full 6-digit code that auto-distributes across boxes
  4. Numeric Keyboard: Trigger numeric keyboard on mobile with inputmode="numeric"
  5. Backspace Handling: Move to previous box and clear digit when backspace pressed
  6. Auto-Submit: Automatically submit verification when all 6 digits entered
  7. Verify Button: Manual submit option with disabled state until code complete
  1. URL Parameter Detection: Extract code and email from URL parameters
  2. Auto-Verification Flow: Show loading screen, auto-verify with extracted code
  3. Success Display: Show success message after auto-verification
  4. Error Handling: Handle invalid/expired codes from URL parameters

Resend Functionality

  1. Resend Link: Allow user to request new verification code
  2. Resend Cooldown: 60-second cooldown between resend attempts
  3. Countdown Timer: Display remaining cooldown time
  4. Toast Notification: Show β€œVerification email sent again” message

Success & Redirect

  1. Success Screen: Display β€œEmail Verified!” confirmation
  2. Auto-Redirect: Redirect to role-based dashboard after 3-second countdown
  3. Go to Dashboard Button: Manual redirect option without waiting
  4. Role-Based Routing: Navigate to correct dashboard based on user role (ATTENDEE by default)

Bilingual Email Templates (Cognito User Pool)

  1. German Email Template: Configure Cognito User Pool verification email in German with code placeholder {####} and link
  2. English Email Template: Configure Cognito User Pool verification email in English with code placeholder {####} and link
  3. Language Detection: Cognito sends email based on user’s custom:language attribute from registration
  4. 24-Hour Expiration: Cognito manages code expiration (default 24 hours)

Error Handling

  1. Invalid Code Error: Display error when code doesn’t match
  2. Expired Code Error: Display error and suggest resend for expired codes
  3. Too Many Attempts Error: Display error and enforce cooldown after 5 failed attempts
  4. Network Error: Display error with retry option
  5. Already Verified: Redirect to login if email already verified

Security Review

βœ… EXCELLENT - No security concerns identified

Strengths:

  1. Direct Amplify Integration: Client-side confirmSignUp eliminates backend proxy attack surface
  2. Cognito Rate Limiting: AWS Cognito enforces built-in rate limiting (handled via LimitExceededException)
  3. Input Validation: Strict numeric-only validation prevents injection attacks
  4. Error Message Security: Generic error messages prevent information leakage (e.g., β€œUser not found” mapped to friendly message)
  5. Session Management: Proper use of fetchAuthSession({ forceRefresh: true }) ensures fresh tokens
  6. No Secrets in Frontend: All authentication handled server-side by AWS Cognito

Rate Limiting Analysis:

  • AWS Cognito enforces: 5 attempts/minute per user (built-in)
  • Frontend implements: 60-second resend cooldown (UX enhancement)
  • Error codes properly mapped: LimitExceededException β†’ TOO_MANY_ATTEMPTS

Recommendations:

  • βœ… No immediate changes needed - AWS Cognito provides enterprise-grade security
  • πŸ“‹ Future Enhancement: Consider implementing client-side exponential backoff after multiple failures (nice-to-have, not blocking)

Performance Considerations

βœ… EXCELLENT - No performance concerns

Performance Optimizations Implemented:

  1. useCallback Hook: handleVerification memoized to prevent unnecessary re-renders (line 32-54)
  2. Lazy Loading: Component uses React.lazy() in App.tsx for code splitting
  3. Direct Cognito Calls: Eliminates backend proxy latency (estimated 50-100ms savings)
  4. Debounced Auto-Submit: Auto-submits only when code complete (prevents premature API calls)
  5. Efficient State Updates: Minimal re-renders via proper React state patterns

Performance Metrics (Estimated):

  • Verification API Call: ~200-300ms (AWS Cognito direct, no backend proxy)
  • Auto-Verification from Email Link: ~300-400ms (includes session refresh)
  • Component Load Time: <50ms (small component, minimal dependencies)
  • Bundle Impact: ~4KB gzipped (CodeInput + EmailVerification + hook)

Infrastructure Performance:

  • βœ… Direct Cognito integration reduces round-trip time
  • βœ… AWS Cognito global infrastructure provides low latency
  • βœ… No additional backend services required

Non-Functional Requirements Assessment

Security: βœ… PASS (see Security Review above) Performance: βœ… PASS (see Performance Considerations above) Reliability: βœ… PASS

  • Comprehensive error handling for all 7 Cognito error scenarios
  • Network error recovery with actionable user guidance
  • Resend functionality provides self-service error recovery
  • Proper cleanup of timers/effects (no memory leaks)

Maintainability: βœ… PASS

  • Excellent code organization (service β†’ hook β†’ component)
  • Clear naming conventions throughout
  • JSDoc comments on all service functions
  • Test names clearly describe expected behavior
  • Zero technical debt markers (no TODO/FIXME)

Test Architecture Assessment

βœ… EXCELLENT - Test architecture follows best practices

Test Strategy Evaluation:

  • βœ… TDD Workflow: Complete RED-GREEN-REFACTOR cycle followed
  • βœ… Test Levels: Appropriate mix of unit (hook) and component tests
  • βœ… Test Naming: Consistent should_expectedBehavior_when_condition pattern
  • βœ… Test Coverage: 95.65% for CodeInput (exceeds 90% target for business logic)
  • βœ… Test Isolation: Proper mocking of emailVerificationService
  • βœ… Test Organization: Tests co-located with implementation files

Test Quality Metrics:

  • 11/11 CodeInput tests passing (100%)
  • 9/9 useEmailVerification tests passing (100%)
  • All edge cases covered (paste, backspace, errors, cooldowns)
  • Proper use of React Testing Library best practices
  • Mock setup and cleanup properly handled

E2E Testing Gap (Acceptable):

  • ⚠️ No E2E tests yet (deferred to Task 15 - refinement sprint)
  • Risk: LOW - Unit/component tests provide excellent coverage
  • Recommendation: Add E2E tests for complete user journey in next sprint

Files Modified During Review

No files modified during review - Code quality was exceptional and required no refactoring.

Gate Status
