Story

As a user of any role, I want my user profile, preferences, and settings managed through consolidated RESTful APIs, so that I can efficiently manage my account and domain services can integrate with user data.

Domain Context

Primary Domain

Shared Infrastructure & Core Services - User Management (Master Data)

Involved Services

  • Company-User Management Service (existing service - user management portion)
  • API Gateway (routing, authentication middleware)
  • AWS Cognito (authentication sync, custom attributes)
  • S3 (profile picture storage)
  • Company Management APIs (within same service for user-company relationships)
  • Shared-Kernel Foundation:
    • Exception hierarchy (NotFoundException, ValidationException, BusinessException)
    • ErrorResponse (standardized error format with correlationId, path, severity)
    • DomainEvent & DomainEventPublisher (event-driven architecture)
    • Value objects (UserId, EventId)
    • Query utilities (FilterParser, SortParser, PaginationUtils, FieldSelector, IncludeParser)
    • SecurityContextHelper (user context extraction)
  • API Consolidation Foundation: Story 1.15a
  • API Specifications: Story 1.15a.7 (Users API Consolidation), Story 1.15a.8 (Organizers API Consolidation)
  • OpenAPI Code Generation: Generate API interfaces and DTOs from users-api.openapi.yml

Cross-Domain Dependencies

  • Depends on: Story 1.2 (API Gateway), Story 1.14 (Company Management APIs in company-user-management-service)
  • Integrates with: AWS Cognito for authentication, Company Management for user-company associations
  • Used by: Speaker, Partner, Attendee services via get-or-create endpoint
  • Publishes Events: UserCreatedEvent, UserRoleChangedEvent, UserDeletedEvent to EventBridge

Requirements Context

  • FR1: Role-based authentication with user profiles (Organizer, Speaker, Partner, Attendee)
  • FR27: User profile management with preferences and settings
  • NFR-Security: User data protection and GDPR compliance (from Story 1.11)
  • NFR-Data Quality: User data validation and integrity
  • CR1: Support for migrating existing user data

Workflow Steps (if applicable)

N/A - Foundation service supporting all workflows across all domains

Acceptance Criteria Source

  • Epic 1 reorganization: User Management extracted from Story 1.14
  • Story 1.15a.6 (Company & User Management API Consolidation, User Management section, ACs 11-22)
  • Story 1.15a.7 (Users API Consolidation, Lines 1-288)
  • Story 1.15a.8 (Organizers API Consolidation)

User-Company Relationship Ownership

Architectural Decision

User Service owns the user-company relationship via User.companyId field. This is a one-way dependency from User Service β†’ Company Service.

Key Design Principles:

  • βœ… User Service: Owns User.companyId (foreign key reference to Company)
  • βœ… User Service: Provides GET /api/v1/users?company={} to query users by company
  • βœ… User Service: May call Company Service to validate company exists during user creation/update
  • ❌ Company Service: Has NO employee management endpoints
  • ❌ Company Service: Does NOT maintain employee relationships or counts
  • ❌ Company Service: Does NOT depend on User Service

Data Flow Pattern:

User Service β†’ depends on β†’ Company Service (validation only)
Company Service β†’ NO dependency on User Service

To Get Employees of a Company:

GET /api/v1/users?company={companyId}  (User Service endpoint)

Rationale:

  1. Single Source of Truth: User entity owns its company affiliation
  2. Simple Data Model: No many-to-many relationship tables needed
  3. Clear Boundaries: Company is foundational, User depends on it (not vice-versa)
  4. DDD Compliance: User aggregate contains its own company reference
  5. No Circular Dependencies: One-way dependency graph

Migration from Story 1.14:

  • Removed EmployeeRelationship entity from Company Service
  • Removed employee management endpoints from Company Service
  • User Service is the single source of truth for user-company associations

Architecture Context

Architecture Patterns

[Source: architecture/06-backend-architecture.md#service-architecture-pattern]

  • Domain-Driven Design: User as aggregate root with proper bounded context
  • Repository Pattern: JPA repositories with custom query methods for user search
  • Service Layer: Business logic separation from controllers (UserService, PreferencesService, RoleService)
  • DTO Pattern: Clear separation between domain models and API contracts
  • Shared-Kernel Integration:
    • Use shared-kernel exception hierarchy (UserNotFoundException extends NotFoundException)
    • Use shared-kernel ErrorResponse for all API error responses
    • Use shared-kernel DomainEvent for all domain events (UserCreatedEvent, UserUpdatedEvent, UserDeletedEvent)
    • Use shared-kernel DomainEventPublisher for EventBridge integration
    • Use shared-kernel types (UserId) for type safety
    • Use shared-kernel SecurityContextHelper for user context extraction

[Source: architecture/04-api-design.md#rest-api-specification]

  • RESTful API Design: Standard CRUD operations with OpenAPI 3.1 documentation
  • OpenAPI Code Generation:
    • Generate API interfaces and DTOs from users-api.openapi.yml using OpenAPI Generator plugin
    • Import shared-kernel types (ErrorResponse, PaginationMetadata) via importMappings
    • Controllers implement generated interfaces for type safety
    • Hybrid approach: generate interfaces/DTOs, write controllers manually
  • Advanced Query Patterns: FilterParser, SortParser, PaginationUtils, FieldSelector, IncludeParser from shared-kernel
  • Resource Expansion: ?include=company,roles,preferences to reduce API calls
  • Search Functionality: User autocomplete with Caffeine in-memory caching for performance

[Source: architecture/03-data-architecture.md#user-data-model]

  • User Entity: UUID identifier, email, name, roles, company affiliation
  • User Preferences: Theme, language, notification settings
  • User Settings: Account settings, privacy controls
  • Role Management: User roles with business rules enforcement

Infrastructure Components

[Source: architecture/02-infrastructure-deployment.md]

Dev Notes - Implementation Guide

Service Setup

Service located at services/company-user-management-service/ following standard Spring Boot structure with DDD patterns (domain, service, controller, repository layers).

Technical Design Notes

1. User Aggregate (domain/User.java)

java
@Entity
@Table(name = "user_profiles")
public class User {
    // Fields: id (UUID), username, email, firstName, lastName, bio, companyId,
    // profilePictureUrl, profilePictureS3Key, roles, preferences, settings,
    // isActive, createdAt, updatedAt, lastLoginAt

    public void addRole(Role role);
    public void removeRole(Role role);
    public boolean hasRole(Role role);
    public void recordLogin();
}

2. Role Enum (domain/Role.java)

java
public enum Role {
    ORGANIZER, SPEAKER, PARTNER, ATTENDEE
}

2a. Domain Events (event/*.java) - Extending Shared-Kernel

java
/**
 * Story 1.16.2: Uses String IDs (username, company name) instead of UUID wrappers
 */
public class UserCreatedEvent extends DomainEvent<String> {
    // Fields: email, firstName, lastName, companyId
    public UserCreatedEvent(String username, String email, String firstName, String lastName, String companyId, String createdByUsername);
}

public class UserUpdatedEvent extends DomainEvent<String> {
    // Fields: email, firstName, lastName, companyId
    public UserUpdatedEvent(String username, String email, String firstName, String lastName, String companyId, String updatedByUsername);
}

public class UserDeletedEvent extends DomainEvent<String> {
    // Fields: email, firstName, lastName
    public UserDeletedEvent(String username, String email, String firstName, String lastName, String deletedByUsername);
}

2b. Exception Classes (exception/*.java) - Extending Shared-Kernel

java
public class UserNotFoundException extends NotFoundException {
    public UserNotFoundException(String userId);
}

public class UserValidationException extends ValidationException {
    public UserValidationException(String message);
    public UserValidationException(String field, String message);
    public UserValidationException(String message, Map<String, Object> details);
}

public class MinimumOrganizersException extends BusinessException {
    public MinimumOrganizersException(String message);
}

2c. Global Exception Handler (exception/GlobalExceptionHandler.java) - Returns Shared-Kernel ErrorResponse

java
@RestControllerAdvice
public class GlobalExceptionHandler {
    public ResponseEntity<ErrorResponse> handleNotFoundException(NotFoundException ex, HttpServletRequest request);
    public ResponseEntity<ErrorResponse> handleValidationException(ValidationException ex, HttpServletRequest request);
    public ResponseEntity<ErrorResponse> handleMethodArgumentNotValidException(MethodArgumentNotValidException ex, HttpServletRequest request);
}

3. User Service (service/UserService.java) - Story 1.16.2: Username-based API

java
@Service
@Transactional
public class UserService {
    // Dependencies: UserRepository, CognitoIntegrationService, DomainEventPublisher,
    // UserSearchService, SecurityContextHelper, SlugGenerationService

    public UserResponse getCurrentUser();
    public UserResponse updateCurrentUser(UpdateUserRequest request);
    public List<UserResponse> listUsers(String roleFilter, String companyFilter);
    public UserResponse getUserByUsername(String username);
    public void deleteUser(String username);
    public GetOrCreateUserResponse getOrCreateUser(GetOrCreateUserRequest request);

    private User createNewUser(GetOrCreateUserRequest request);
    private UserResponse mapToResponse(User user);
}

4. Build Configuration (build.gradle) - OpenAPI Generator & Shared-Kernel

gradle
plugins {
    id 'org.openapi.generator' version '7.2.0' // OpenAPI code generation
    // ... other plugins
}

dependencies {
    implementation project(':shared-kernel') // Shared Kernel dependency
    // OpenAPI Generator dependencies
    // ... other dependencies
}

openApiGenerate {
    generatorName = 'spring'
    inputSpec = "$rootDir/docs/api/users-api.openapi.yml".toString()
    outputDir = "$buildDir/generated".toString()

    // Import shared-kernel types (ErrorResponse, PaginationMetadata)
    importMappings = [...]
    configOptions = [interfaceOnly: 'true', useSpringBoot3: 'true', ...]
}

compileJava.dependsOn tasks.openApiGenerate

5. Database Migrations (Story 1.16.2 Compliant)

CRITICAL: Story 1.16.2 dual-identifier pattern:

  • UUID as internal primary key (database performance)
  • username as public identifier (API responses)
  • company_id stores company name (not UUID)

V4__create_user_profiles_table.sql:

sql
CREATE TABLE user_profiles (
    id UUID PRIMARY KEY, -- Internal PK (NOT exposed in API)
    username VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL UNIQUE, -- Public ID (Story 1.16.2)
    cognito_user_id VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL UNIQUE,
    email VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL UNIQUE,
    first_name VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
    last_name VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
    bio TEXT,
    company_id VARCHAR(12),  -- Company name (Story 1.16.2), not UUID

    -- Profile picture, embedded preferences/settings columns, timestamps
    -- ... (see migration file for full schema)

    CONSTRAINT chk_username_format CHECK (username ~ '^[a-z]+\.[a-z]+(\.[0-9]+)?$'),
    CONSTRAINT chk_company_id_format CHECK (company_id IS NULL OR company_id ~ '^[a-zA-Z0-9]{1,12}$')
);

V5__create_role_assignments_table.sql:

sql
CREATE TABLE role_assignments (
    user_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES user_profiles(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
    role VARCHAR(50) NOT NULL CHECK (role IN ('ORGANIZER', 'SPEAKER', 'PARTNER', 'ATTENDEE')),
    PRIMARY KEY (user_id, role)
);

V6__create_activity_history_table.sql:

sql
CREATE TABLE activity_history (
    id UUID PRIMARY KEY,
    user_id UUID NOT NULL REFERENCES user_profiles(id) ON DELETE CASCADE,
    activity_type VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
    entity_type VARCHAR(100) NOT NULL,
    entity_id VARCHAR(255) NOT NULL, -- Can be eventCode, username, company name (Story 1.16.2)
    description TEXT NOT NULL,
    metadata JSONB,
    timestamp TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE
);

V7__create_user_management_indexes.sql:

sql
-- Story 1.16.2: Critical indexes for dual-identifier pattern
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX idx_users_username ON user_profiles(username);
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX idx_users_email ON user_profiles(email);
CREATE INDEX idx_users_company ON user_profiles(company_id);
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX idx_users_cognito_user_id ON user_profiles(cognito_user_id);
CREATE INDEX idx_role_assignments_role ON role_assignments(role);
CREATE INDEX idx_activity_history_user_timestamp ON activity_history(user_id, timestamp DESC);
-- ... (see migration file for full index list)

Code Quality Assessment

Overall: STRONG IMPLEMENTATION with excellent Story 1.16.2 compliance and comprehensive TDD approach.

Strengths:

  • βœ… Story 1.16.2 Dual-Identifier Pattern: Correctly implemented throughout - UUID internal PK, username public API ID, company name (not UUID)
  • βœ… DDD Architecture: Clean bounded context with proper domain/service/repository/controller separation
  • βœ… Test Coverage: 103 tests with 99 passing (96% pass rate) - 4 failures are test design issues, not functionality bugs
  • βœ… Database Design: Proper constraints (username/company format validation), strategic indexes, embedded preferences/settings
  • βœ… Shared-Kernel Integration: Correct use of DomainEvent, ErrorResponse, exception hierarchy, SlugGenerationService
  • βœ… Security: Cognito integration, role-based authorization (@PreAuthorize), input validation (@Valid), no sensitive data logging
  • βœ… Performance: @Timed annotations on 7 critical endpoints, Caffeine in-memory cache (10-min TTL), optimized dual-identifier indexes
  • βœ… Monitoring: CloudWatch metrics (@Timed/@Counted), structured JSON logging, X-Correlation-ID, health endpoints

Key Implementation Highlights:

  1. All 14 acceptance criteria have corresponding tests and implementation
  2. Comprehensive Bruno API tests (12 E2E tests) following existing patterns
  3. Username generation using SlugGenerationService with uniqueness validation
  4. Get-or-create pattern with idempotency for domain service integration
  5. Profile picture upload with S3 presigned URLs and CloudFront serving
  6. Domain events published with correct String IDs (username, company name)

Refactoring Performed

NO CODE REFACTORING PERFORMED - Review-only mode per instructions. Code quality is already high.

Compliance Check

  • Coding Standards: βœ“ PASS

    • Naming conventions followed (camelCase fields, PascalCase classes, snake_case DB columns)
    • Proper use of Lombok (@Builder, @Getter, @Setter, @NoArgsConstructor, @AllArgsConstructor)
    • Clear Javadoc on all public methods
    • Exception handling follows shared-kernel hierarchy
  • Project Structure: βœ“ PASS

    • Follows standard Spring Boot DDD structure (domain, service, repository, controller, dto, exception packages)
    • Proper use of @Entity, @Service, @Repository, @RestController annotations
    • Flyway migrations in db/migration with proper versioning (V4-V7)
  • Testing Strategy: ⚠️ CONCERNS (see below)

    • TDD workflow followed (RED-GREEN-REFACTOR documented in Dev Agent Record)
    • Integration tests extend AbstractIntegrationTest with Testcontainers PostgreSQL (production parity βœ“)
    • Unit tests >90%, integration tests >85% - 4 migration tests failing due to test design issue
  • All ACs Met: βœ“ PASS (with documented deferrals)

    • ACs 1-12: Fully implemented and tested
    • AC 13-14: Partially implemented (basic resource expansion working, advanced query patterns deferred to Task 14)
    • Tasks 14, 17, 18 intentionally deferred to future stories (documented in Change Log)

Issues Checklist

MEDIUM Priority (Must Address Before Merge)

  • Fix UserManagementMigrationsTest transaction design
    • Issue: 4 tests fail with β€œtransaction aborted” because @Transactional test executes multiple constraint violations in same transaction
    • Why: After first INSERT fails (constraint violation), PostgreSQL aborts transaction. Subsequent INSERTs fail with β€œcurrent transaction is aborted, commands ignored until end of transaction block”
    • How: Remove @Transactional from class-level OR split each constraint validation into separate test methods OR use @Rollback(false) with manual transaction management
    • Impact: Constraints ARE working correctly (first violation properly caught), but tests create false impression of broken functionality
    • Effort: 15 minutes
    • Tests Affected:
      • should_enforceUsernameFormat_when_invalidUsernameInserted (line 129)
      • should_acceptValidCompanyId_when_correctFormatProvided (line 215)
      • should_enforceCompanyIdFormat_when_invalidCompanyIdProvided (line 185)
      • should_cascadeDeleteRoles_when_userDeleted (line ~260)

LOW Priority (Can Address Later)

  • Suppress CloudWatch metrics error in test profile

    • File: services/company-user-management-service/src/main/resources/application-test.yml
    • Change: Add spring.cloud.aws.cloudwatch.enabled: false to test profile
    • Why: Tests generate CloudWatch credential errors during shutdown (cosmetic noise, not functional issue)
    • Effort: 5 minutes
  • Track TODO comments as technical debt

    • File: UserService.java (lines 107-109, 208-210, 316)
    • Change: Create follow-up story items for:
      • TODO: Track updated fields and previous values for better event audit trail (line 107)
      • TODO: Check business rules (last organizer) in future task (line 208)
      • TODO: Cascade delete across domain services in future task (line 209)
      • TODO: Audit logging in future task (line 210)
      • TODO: Fetch company details from Company Management Service in Task 14 (line 316)
    • Why: Technical debt should be tracked in backlog, not buried in code comments
    • Effort: 1 hour (tracking only)

Security Review

βœ… PASS - Excellent security implementation:

  1. Authentication & Authorization:

    • Cognito integration via CognitoIntegrationService (syncUserAttributes, createCognitoUser)
    • Role-based access control with @PreAuthorize annotations
    • SecurityContextHelper for user context extraction
    • JWT validation handled by API Gateway (per architecture)
  2. Input Validation:

    • @Valid annotations on request DTOs with @NotNull, @Email constraints
    • Database constraints (username format, company ID format) prevent malformed data
    • parseRole() method validates enum values gracefully
    • File upload validation (max 5MB, allowed types: PNG/JPG/JPEG/SVG)
  3. Data Protection:

    • No passwords stored or logged (Cognito manages authentication)
    • Profile pictures via presigned S3 URLs (15-min expiry)
    • CloudFront CDN for secure content delivery
    • GDPR compliance with deleteUser() method
  4. Sensitive Data Handling:

    • No sensitive data in log statements (verified log.info/log.debug calls)
    • Structured JSON logging with correlation IDs for audit trails
    • Domain events for user lifecycle tracking

Performance Considerations

βœ… PASS - Well-optimized for target load (1000 users/month):

  1. Caching Strategy:

    • Caffeine in-memory cache for user search (10-min TTL, 1000 max entries)
    • @Cacheable annotation with query+role cache key
    • Cache invalidation on user updates (searchService.invalidateCache())
    • Cost-effective in-memory caching (no distributed cache infrastructure needed)
  2. Database Optimization:

    • Dual-identifier pattern: UUID PK (performance), username unique index (API lookups)
    • Strategic indexes: username, email, company_id, cognito_user_id, roles
    • EAGER fetch for roles acceptable (Set size is small)
    • Flyway migrations with proper constraints
  3. Monitoring:

    • @Timed annotations on 7 critical endpoints with percentiles (0.5, 0.95, 0.99)
    • @Counted metrics for business events (role changes, GDPR deletions)
    • CloudWatch metrics publishing (1-min step interval)
    • Performance targets: <100ms P95 for GET /users/me, <150ms for resource expansion
  4. API Design:

    • Resource expansion (?include=company,preferences,settings) reduces round trips
    • Pagination support planned (Task 14: PaginationUtils)
    • S3 presigned URLs for direct uploads (no backend proxy bottleneck)

Gate Status

Gate: CONCERNS β†’ docs/qa/gates/1.14-2-user-management-service-foundation.yml

Quality Score: 80/100

  • Base: 100
  • Deductions: -10 for each CONCERN (2 concerns = -20)
  • Calculation: 100 - (10 Γ— 2) = 80

Top Issues:

  1. MEDIUM: 4 migration tests fail due to @Transactional test design (constraints work correctly, tests need refactoring)
  2. LOW: TODO comments indicate incomplete future work (track as backlog items)
  3. LOW: CloudWatch metrics error during test shutdown (cosmetic test noise)

Gate Decision Rationale: CONCERNS gate is appropriate because:

  • βœ… Strong foundation: Excellent DDD implementation, Story 1.16.2 compliance
  • βœ… High test coverage: 99/103 tests passing (96% pass rate)
  • ⚠️ Test design issue, not functionality bug: Constraints ARE working correctly
  • ⚠️ Non-blocking issues: 15-min test refactoring + 5-min CloudWatch suppression
  • βœ… Production ready with minor fixes: Core functionality is solid

Recommendation: Fix migration tests and suppress CloudWatch test noise (20 min total effort), then promote to PASS. βœ… COMPLETED - All fixes applied

Re-Review Results (2025-10-21 20:59)
